Meta is discontinuing its Muse generative AI feature that it launched last week.

Muse quickly garnered criticism for allowing people to generate images based on photos and videos from public Meta accounts on the likes of Instagram, even if they didn’t consent to this use. In a statement to outlets like Reuters, the company said its intent “was to provide a useful creative tool” but acknowledged that it “missed the mark” with Muse.

While the company did provide an option to opt out of Muse image generation, this wasn’t widely known outside of a few outlets covering it. Worse still, toggling off the setting that allowed Muse to steal your media didn’t provide any recourse to anything that had already been harnessed by the AI.

It remains to be seen what Meta will next do with generative AI. Given that this was the first image generation model from Meta Superintelligence Labs, it’s safe to assume it’s working on some sort of alternative to Muse. The company also recently filed a creepy patent for a “fitness coaching” device that would record and study users’ speech.
