England’s preparations for the second Test against Pakistan have been hit by another off-field controversy involving one of their players. Brydon Carse was reportedly detained by police outside a pub in Derby after a night out with his Durham teammates. The incident has led to an investigation from the Cricket Regulator, while the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has already ruled him out of the upcoming Test at Lord’s.
The development has also brought renewed attention to England’s recent disciplinary issues. Several players have been involved in controversies away from the field over the past year, and former England captain Michael Vaughan believes the latest episode should result in a punishment strong enough to send a clear message to the entire squad.
Brydon Carse dropped from England squad after Derby incident
Carse had been released from England’s Test squad to play for Durham after missing the first Test against Pakistan at Headingley. He took 2-82 and scored 26 runs in Durham’s County Championship victory over Derbyshire before going out with his teammates. Footage later emerged showing the fast bowler surrounded by police officers outside a pub and appearing to be handcuffed. Carse was reportedly detained briefly but was not arrested or charged.
The ECB has referred the matter to the Cricket Regulator for investigation. England have also confirmed that Carse will no longer be available for selection for the second Test at Lord’s, with Hampshire pacer Sonny Baker replacing him in the squad.
Michael Vaughan calls for strong punishment
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Vaughan called for England to take firm action over the incident and the wider disciplinary concerns surrounding the team. The former England captain believes the punishment needs to be severe enough for players to understand that behaviour which brings a bad reputation to the team will have consequences.
“Someone is going to have to get a punishment that sends a shiver down the whole England cricket team and right down through the programme. It’s the only punishment that will really hurt players,” Vaughan said.
However, he also said he would feel for Carse if he ends up taking the blame for a wider problem that has developed over the past nine months.
England’s recent off-field controversies
Carse’s situation comes after several other incidents involving England players. Harry Brook was involved in an incident outside a nightclub in Wellington during the build-up to the Ashes, while Ben Duckett was filmed apparently drunk during England’s holiday in Noosa. More recently, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were involved in a nightclub controversy after breaching England’s team curfew. Both players later received written warnings from the ECB.
With England leading Pakistan 1-0 in the three-Test series, the Carse incident has provided another unwanted distraction. The fast bowler’s immediate future will now depend on the Cricket Regulator’s investigation, while England prepare for the Lord’s Test without him.
