Same devil. New Era. Nearly two decades on, the new trailer for The Devil Wears Prada 2 suggests that while the fashion industry may have changed – Miranda Priestly hasn’t.
In the new trailer, Andrea “Andy” Sachs crosses paths with her former boss Miranda Priestley, who, perhaps unsurprisingly, has no recollection of her. It’s a moment that sets the tone for the trailer: cool, unsentimental and aware of how time has altered the industry, if not the people who once ruled it.
However, Andy enters the sequel with far more confidence than in the first film, and the trailer quickly reveals she is now a Features Editor at Runway, seemingly braced for fresh ordeals with both Miranda and Nigel. Meanwhile, Emily is no longer at the magazine, hinting at a broader exploration of the fashion industry beyond the familiar four walls of Runway.
Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci all return for the iconic sequel, now joined by Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen, Pauline Chalamet, BJ Novak and Conrad Ricamora. A supporting cast yet to be showcased in the trailers, but one that signals the sequels ambition to move past simple nostalgia.
And if the trailer proves anything, it’s that whilst trends come and go, intimidation never really goes out of style.
