    Mitton wins women’s shot put gold at Commonwealth Games

    Sarah Mitton of Liverpool, Nova Scotia has won Canada’s 14th gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland on Wednesday. Mitton’s gold medal came in the women’s shot put as the 2023 World Championship silver medalist successfully defended her Commonwealth Games gold medal from four years ago.

    Mitton posted a winning throw of 19.88 metres. Jessica Oji of Nigeria won the silver medal with 17.87 metres. Lloydricia Cameron of Jamaica won the bronze medal with 17.87 metres. Oji had the tiebreaker because she had the better second best throw between herself and Cameron according to the Canadian Press. Oji’s second best throw was 17.7 metres and Cameron’s second best throw was 17.4 metres. Milton reached the podium by 2.39 metres. Manpreet Kaur of India finished in fourth place with a throw of 17.49 metres.

    In all, Canada won four medals on Wednesday. Alex Bellemare of La Sarre, Quebec won silver in the men’s 94 kilogram weightlifting event, Canada won the bronze medal in men’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball as they defeated Scotland 19-9 in the bronze medal game, and Rose Beaudoin of Ste-Marie-Madeleine, Quebec won the bronze medal in the women’s 86 kilogram weightlifting event.

    In women’s lawn bowling, Kelly McKerihen of Toronto, Ontario improved to a record of one win and one loss after a two sets to zero win (13-2, 10-4) over Abby Andrieux of Jersey. Canada won their first two games in men’s pairs lawn bowling as Ryan Bester of Hanover, Ontario and John Bezear of Kitchener, Ontario beat the Isle of Man and South Africa.

    In boxing, Amber-Jane Wall advanced to the semifinals after a 5-0 win over Niamh Brooks of Wales in the women’s 51 kilograms. She will next face Sakshi Chaudhary of India. Meanwhile, Joshua Ofori of Edmonton, Alberta is in the semifinals and will play Ankush Panghal of India after Desmond Pappoe of Ghana withdrew from the quarterfinal match with a shoulder injury.

    Canada is third in the overall medal standings with 39 medals (14 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 14 bronze medals). Australia leads with 103 medals and England is second with 56 medals.
