N.W.T. Fire says there’s been a “serious incident” involving an aircraft working on a wildfire near Fort Simpson.

In a bulletin late Wednesday, the agency said the incident involved a “bird dog aircraft” that was working with an airtanker group.

N.W.T. Fire did not provide any details about the incident or anyone on board the plane.

The agency said the Department of Environment and Climate Change, as well as the RCMP are investigating. Neither the department nor the police immediately responded to a request for comment.

Fort Simpson Mayor Les Wright declined to comment early Thursday.

Bird dog aircraft are small, typically single-engine planes that carry crew who direct air traffic near a fire and coordinate the airtankers.

The N.W.T. fleet includes four such planes. It’s not yet known which was involved in the incident.
