Over the past four months, people have been following the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. Recently, a former FBI agent has weighed in on the story. As they shared, authorities might be close to uncovering a motive. This also followed recent search efforts previously making headlines.
Former FBI Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer Shared Possible Motive Involving Nancy Guthrie Case
Nancy Guthrie was first reported missing on February 1, 2026. She was last seen at her home in Catalina Foothills, a suburb of Tucson, Arizona.
At the time, Nancy’s daughter, Savannah, stepped away from her role on Today, including her scheduled coverage of the 2026 Winter Olympics. She later returned to the show the following April.
Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer took to X to share an update in the case. She shared, “It’s the biggest public break in Nancy’s Case, as CertiK, arguably the leading crypto security company in the world, has designated Nancy’s abduction as a wrench attack by proxy.” A “wrench attack” refers to a case in which violence or similar threats are used to extort passwords from a victim.
This Comes Out After A Mexican Missing Persons Group Shared An Anonymous Tip
Coffindaffer also shared a screenshot from CertiK that read, “The 84-year-old mother of journalist Savannah Guthrie was kidnapped as part of a $6 million bitcoin ransom demand, illustrating the documented trend of proxy target selection already identified in our 2025 report.” Coffindaffer added, “Does CertiK have knowledge as to if Savannah has a Bitcoin account?”
“This is a huge breakthrough. Times have changed. And how these networks operate is new to LE [law enforcement]. Unless LE knows who took Nancy, then a wrench by proxy is on the table. CertiK seems to know.”

Coffindaffer’s share comes out after the Mexican missing persons group, Buscando Corazones, reported that they received an anonymous tip. It claimed that Nancy’s remains were buried in an unmarked grave within the country. Speaking with El Imparcial, the group’s leader, Ramona Guadalupe Ayala Ortiz, shared, “We received an anonymous call telling us that the woman’s remains were in the Mariposa area in a grave over a stream. And this time we came to explore this stream that we failed to explore in the first intervention.”
Around this time, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department shared that they had not been contacted by Mexican authorities over the tip. However, they were aware of the story. On X, Sheriff Chris Nanos noted, “We are aware of reports regarding an anonymous tip related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation that was provided to a group in Mexico. At this time, we have not been contacted by Mexican authorities.”
