Tom Costello is known for covering the news. However, he recently became part of a big story after he helped rescue a teen from a horrifying crash. Since then, he has opened up about the story, including the figures that helped and the effect the incident had on him.

Tom Costello Is Known For His Work With NBC News & Its Various Platforms

Costello is a journalist known for serving as a senior correspondent for NBC News. Based in Washington, D.C., his work has been featured on platforms including The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, MSNBC, and CNBC. He is particularly known for covering aviation and NASA.

Costello joined NBC News in 2004. Prior to this, he served as the senior correspondent at CNBC Business News in New York.

Recently, Costello discussed an incident that took place earlier this week in which he sprang into action to help a young driver. He recently appeared on NBC News to discuss the story.

Driving home from work on Monday, May 11, Costello found himself pulling the driver from a burning vehicle to safety. He recounted, “It was horrific. What happened was, this car passed me last night as I’m leaving work at 100 mph — that’s my guesstimate. And that car then made a corner and slammed into a concrete jersey barrier on the beltway.”

“When he did, the car exploded into a hundred pieces — not fire, immediately, but pieces everywhere. And I thought: If that person survived, you know, they need help fast.”

Costello Discussed Two Figures Who Helped Him Carry The Teen To Safety

Costello then called 911 for help, telling them, “Get your trucks rolling right now,” as he shared on NBC. He stressed that the young driver needed help as soon as possible.

Opening the car door, Costello initially feared the worst. The driver, a teenager, looked to be in shock from the crash. Though he could hear, he said that he was in pain and couldn’t feel much of his fingers or toes.

Costello was initially hesitant to move the teen. However, the situation proved dire when he realized that the car was still burning. The reporter waved down cars for help. One who stopped turned out to be an orthopedic surgeon who helped support the driver’s neck. Another, a nurse, held his legs. Costello himself grabbed his torso.

The three carried the young man to safety. This proved to be timely, as the car indeed exploded shortly after this. Costello later admitted that he had trouble falling asleep that night due to the incident.

As he concluded his story, Costello thanked the heroic figures who helped him and shared a message for those listening. He continued, “I mean, thank God for that orthopedic surgeon, and the nurse, she was amazing. I think the lesson here is: Watch your kids. I mean, this was [driver], probably hadn’t been driving long. … He should be dead. I can’t believe he’s alive, to be honest with you.”
