Weatherly is an actor known for playing Special Agent Anthony “Tony” DiNozzo in the NCIS franchise. Originally playing the part from 2003 to 2016, he made a cameo appearance in 2024 before revealing big news at the time. He would continue to play the character in the spin-off, NCIS: Tony & Ziva on Paramount+, alongside Cote de Pablo reprising the role of Ziva David.
Throughout his career, Weatherly has had multiple notable roles. He also played Logan Cale in Dark Angel and Dr. Jason Bull in Bull from 2016 to 2022.
However, recent news has some fans wondering if they will soon see Weatherly return to the NCIS franchise. Back in December, NCIS: Tony & Ziva was cancelled after one season. This would naturally free him up to return to the main show.
Indeed, it has been confirmed that Weatherly will return to NCIS for the 2026-2027 season. The actor himself teased the big news in a joint post, also shared by CBS’ and the show’s official pages, on Instagram.
In the video, Weatherly shared, “I’m coming back to NCIS in the fall as Tony DiNozzo. How do I tell people?” A caption announced the character’s return for the show’s 24th season, just as he told fans that they will see him in the fall. The NCIS page shared in a caption, “We’ve missed this one… welcome back, old friend!”

It’s believed that the actor will be returning to the show for a season-long arc. The character’s return comes as the series left on a big cliffhanger. Torres confronted Mateo about suspicious behavior. Both were armed, and things ended with a gunshot. However, it was unclear just who was hit and who fired.
This also isn’t the only NCIS return fans have to look forward to. Outside of the main show, Mark Harmon is expected to bring back Leroy Jethro Gibbs onscreen in the third season of NCIS: Origins.
