Netflix has officially released the first trailer for Voicemails for Isabelle, starring Zoey Deutch (Set It Up) and Nick Robinson (Love, Simon), and you can watch it below.
Following the success of Scrambled (2023), filmmaker Leah McKendrick is set to follow up her directorial debut with Voicemails for Isabelle, a new romantic comedy she both wrote and directed.
The upcoming romantic comedy follows Jill (Deutch), coping with the loss of her sister. In an attempt to process her emotions, Jill begins leaving heartfelt voice messages sharing stories of her life in San Francisco. However, due to an unexpected mix-up, the messages end up reaching a real estate agent in Austin, played by Robinson, setting the stage for an emotional and unconventional connection between two strangers.
The trailer teases a blend of heartfelt drama and lighthearted humour, positioning the film as one of Netflix’s major romantic comedy releases for the summer.
“Wes could easily come off as callous or even manipulative in the wrong hands. It was a concern on the page, but that faded as soon as we cast Nick,” McKendrick told TUDUM “There’s a genuine sensitivity to him, on and offscreen. And that smile! We’d all follow him anywhere.”
On casting Deutch, the director added: “Jill’s journey spans from dark, debilitating grief to tingly, Lover-era T-Swift new romance,” says McKendrick. “We always knew we needed an actor who was disarming and hilarious, yet excruciatingly raw. No one can access all the colors quite like Zoey can. She’s endlessly lovable.”
Deutch was recently seen in Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague as well as Anniversary, continuing a strong run of critically recognised performances. Robinson, meanwhile, recently appeared in Netflix’s western drama series The Abandons alongside Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey.
The supporting cast also includes Nick Offerman, Ciara Bravo, Lukas Gage, and Harry Shum Jr.
Voicemails for Isabelle premieres on June 19th exclusively on Netflix.
