Scott Edwards has stepped down as the Netherlands‘ ODI captain, bringing an end to a leadership tenure that coincided with one of the most successful periods in Dutch cricket. The 29-year-old announced his decision to teammates on July 31, following the conclusion of the Utrecht leg of the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2. Edwards revealed that the move had been under consideration for some time and felt it was the right moment to hand over the reins.

Netherlands enjoyed a memorable rise under Scott Edwards’ leadership

Edwards took over the ODI captaincy in June 2022 after the opening match of England’s tour of the Netherlands, succeeding Pieter Seelaar. Over the next four years, he led the Dutch side in 56 One-Day Internationals, registering 24 victories while suffering 29 defeats. While the numbers only tell part of the story, his tenure will be remembered for helping the Netherlands compete consistently against stronger cricketing nations.

The wicketkeeper-batter played a crucial role in shaping a fearless and competitive team culture that enabled the Netherlands to produce several landmark victories on the international stage. The biggest highlights came during the 2023 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup in India, where the Dutch stunned South Africa in Dharamsala before defeating Bangladesh in Kolkata. Those victories earned widespread praise and showcased the team’s ability to challenge established cricketing powers.

Edwards also enjoyed significant success in the T20I format. He captained the Netherlands in 50 of the 86 T20 internationals he featured in, overseeing some of the country’s most memorable performances. At the 2022 T20 World Cup, the Netherlands defeated both Zimbabwe and South Africa, with the latter result becoming one of the tournament’s defining moments. The victory knocked South Africa out of the competition and cemented the Dutch side’s reputation as giant-killers on the global stage.

Explaining his decision to step aside, Edwards admitted the move had been discussed with former head coach Ryan Cook and other trusted figures over an extended period.

“Apologies for sort of springing this one on you guys. I’m actually stepping down from the captaincy from here. I think it’s something Cookie and I have been speaking about… and this is the time that feels right for me,” Edwards said as quoted by Cricinfo.

Star all-rounder appointed as new ODI captain of Netherlands

The Netherlands have moved quickly to ensure a smooth transition by appointing Bas de Leede as Edwards’ successor. The talented all-rounder will captain the side for the remainder of the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 campaign and begins his tenure with the backing of an experienced squad. Speaking after the announcement, De Leede paid an emotional tribute to Edwards, praising the outgoing captain’s selfless leadership and the positive environment he created within the team.

He described Edwards as someone who always placed teammates in the best position to succeed, saying that quality had benefited both the squad and individual players. De Leede also expressed excitement about seeing Edwards continue contributing purely as a player, calling him a “very special player” and adding that he looked forward to leading him on the field.

“It doesn’t set just the team up for success, but it sets individuals up for success. And I think we should all be very thankful for that, for a guy to be that selfless to put others into the best space to perform. It’s pretty f*****g special. I’m so excited to see what’s more to come for you as a player. I think you’re a very special player and I can’t wait to lead you on the field,” said Leede.

With the captaincy changing hands, the Netherlands now begin a new chapter under De Leede while retaining the experience and leadership qualities of Edwards within the playing group. The transition offers continuity for the Dutch side as they continue their pursuit of qualification and further progress on the international stage.
