Forget dragons, zombies, and cunning final bosses. There’s a new game making waves in Ontario with a much more serious opponent.
The Invisible Line is a new web-based RPG from the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) that drops you into an ordinary neighbourhood where the biggest threat isn’t monsters or magic — it’s what’s happening overhead.
Naturally, we had to give it a try.
Meeting my unlikely enemy
At first glance, The Invisible Line feels like an old-school Nintendo game, complete with colourful pixel-style graphics, simple controls, and a charming little yellow protagonist. But instead of collecting coins or defeating enemies, the objective is much more unconventional.
Within seconds – Zap! I lost. My little yellow character got fried.
I respawned. I tried again. Another game over.
And this will probably happen to you too. The fun comes from the increasingly tongue-in-cheek game-over messages, which slowly clue you in to what you’re missing. Each failed attempt teaches you one tiny lesson.
When you notice the pattern, you’ll see the obvious path isn’t always the safe one. In the gaming world, the urge is often to charge ahead (at least, for me it was!). But The Invisible Line flips the script by teaching that sometimes the smartest move is taking a step back.
Sometimes there are trees or shrubs blocking your path. But essentially, your ultimate challenge is to not die by keeping yourself at least three metres away from the powerlines. It’s pretty simple, and when you make the right decision, moving down away from the powerlines (or just let the timer run out, a fun Easter egg I thought), you move up a level.
Once I figured out the trick, I quickly moved up to level 10 and beyond, each time getting a fun message of praise for winning.
A tiny game with a big takeaway
The game leans into irony — it’s a little silly, it’s intentionally easy, and its arcade-style gameplay is designed to leave you with one thing stuck in your head long after the game ends. If nothing else, it’s worth playing just for the nostalgia and learning alone!
Sure, The Invisible Line might not take home a Golden Joystick Award. It may not have flashy graphics or a multi-million-dollar budget, but it does have a message that could save you from a real world game over.
