The Troy Jackson anointment is coming.
The former state Senate president and fifth‑generation logger is poised to replace Graham Platner on the Democratic ticket in the Senate race in Maine.
It will set up a November clash with GOP incumbent Sen. Susan M. Collins — all in the shadow of the flameout of Mr. Platner’s campaign.
The race had been central to Democrats’ hopes of flipping the Senate.
Now it is unclear how seriously the national party will get involved, or how Mr. Jackson’s blue‑collar populism and left-wing agenda will hold up once the race shifts to a national contest with real stakes for Senate control.
Mr. Jackson shares the same sort of far-left, working-class message that Mr. Platner leaned on, though without the personal baggage, and with more governing experience and arguably more authenticity.
“He will hold almost all the Platner supporters,” said James Melcher, political science professor at the University of Maine Farmington. “We will have to see if he gets that same level of enthusiasm — especially among young voters.”
“He is not as stirring a speaker as Platner was,” Mr. Melcher said. “He is not smooth. He is not slick. Like a lot of Mainers, he drops various profanities into his conversations.”
That proved enough to slice through the competition in the rapid dash to replace Mr. Platner. His top rivals moved out of the way after it became clear he was on his way to collecting the delegate support to secure the nomination at a late‑innings state party convention this week in Bangor.
But clearing the field was the easy part.

The harder part, the one that will define the next four months, is shifting to a national‑level fight, where every position Mr. Jackson has taken and every alliance he has kept will be scrutinized and amplified.
Republicans already started highlighting his reputation as a loose cannon, including how he cursed and shouted at colleagues during his time as Maine Senate president.
“Democrats have a lose-lose decision between endorsing another volatile socialist or cutting their losses and bailing on Maine,” Natalie Baldassare, spokesperson for the Republican National Committee, said in a recent email blast. “Either way, Maine Democrats own this mess, and voters will hold them accountable in November.”
Mr. Jackson spent more than 20 years in the state legislature, and he has long leaned on his logging roots to project authenticity.
This year, he tried to return to the political fold in a bid for governor, promising to beef up healthcare and childcare services. He finished third.
In his Senate bid, he is supporting Medicare for All and hiking taxes on billionaires and corporations to help pay for more government programs. He opposes new military aid to Israel and has accused the Jewish nation of carrying out genocide in Gaza.
He also has called for abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, including after a federal agent shot and killed 26‑year‑old Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a Colombian national, in Biddeford, sparking protests and thrusting immigration onto the front burner.
“Enough is enough,” Mr. Jackson said in a video posted online. “We need to abolish ICE. You know, people who support having this type of rogue agency need to be replaced also.”
Mr. Jackson has evolved on same-sex marriage. He once opposed it and earned praise from anti‑abortion groups, but has since shifted his stance over the years to backing legislation to expand abortion access and winning strong marks from reproductive‑rights and LGBTQ organizations.
