Windsor police have released the name of the 18-year-old man who’s charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of a 16-year-old boy.

The accused is Hatem Hameed. He’s also charged with uttering threats to cause death and wearing a facemask in the commission of an offence.

The victim’s identity hasn’t been released. Police say he “lost his life in a senseless act of violence.”

Police say the incident happened Sunday around 6 p.m. at a shopping plaza at the corner of Tecumseh Road East and McDougall Street.

Officers attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but the boy later died in hospital.

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens said the killing was “unwarranted” and “unnecessary.”

“We need to make sure we’re working as parents, as educators, as community members making sure that we’re letting young people know what the pathway is to deal with grievances that don’t resort to firearms, weapons and violence,” the mayor told reporters after Monday’s city council meeting.
