Tottenham v Newcastle Premier League preview

Tottenham host Newcastle United on Saturday as Roberto De Zerbi’s men aim to get off the mark in the Premier League following last week’s horror show at Brentford.

Spurs have invested very heavily in the transfer market in a bid to help De Zerbi turn their fortunes around after two successive 17th-placed finishes.

Their summer business included the £100million signing of midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle, but he was one of several players to struggle as Spurs were soundly beaten 3-0 at Brentford last Saturday.

Tottenham’s spending spree continued this week with the signings of Savio and Omar Marmoush from Manchester City.

Savio scored and provided an assist on debut as Spurs thrashed Charlton Athletic 5-1 in the EFL Cup in midweek and could make his first start for the club versus Newcastle, a team against whom he scored in the FA Cup last season.

Marmoush was also on target in that tie at St James’ Park and has a stunning record in games with the Magpies.

Indeed, the Egyptian has seven goals and an assist in five career games against Newcastle, whose fans will hope to see him start the game from the bench.

Alongside Tonali, Newcastle also lost key players in former captain Bruno Guimaraes and winger Anthony Gordon, while Eddie Howe ended his celebrated five-year spell as manager last month.

But Newcastle have made seven signings in the transfer window and impressed in Matthias Jaissle’s first competitive game in charge, a thrilling 2-2 draw with Liverpool in which the Reds needed a last-gasp penalty to claim a share of the spoils.

And De Zerbi knows Jaissle’s men cannot be underestimated.

“Newcastle sold many players, many good players, but they closed [deals for] other very good players,” De Zerbi told a pre-match press conference.

“It’s a young team with quick players, good players. But we lost the first game at Brentford. I think we have to play better, much better. We have to fight in a different way, and we need to make results for sure.

“Even though we have new players. Another thing, without excuses, we play in our stadium. We are working well with the right atmosphere, and enthusiasm for the new players [that] came [to the club]. Difficult game, tough game, but in the Premier League there is not an easy game, simple game.”

Newcastle’s latest signing was perhaps their most important as they secured the £52million capture of Nico Gonzalez to serve as their number six and lead the midfield Tonali vacated.

Gonzalez could go straight into the side to face former City team-mates Savio and Marmoush, having been presented as a Newcastle player before Wednesday’s 3-2 EFL Cup win over West Brom.

Despite a very good record against Tottenham in recent times, Newcastle are likely to be underdogs in north London.

But Jaissle is confident is side can deliver a repeat display of their effort against Liverpool.

“We will be facing a top team. It is a difficult change,” Jaissle said.

“We will not change our approach. We are facing a really strong opponent. With our playing style, we can cause any opponents problems.”

    Spurs v Newcastle team news

Mohammed Kudus (thigh) may be able to make his long-awaited return and feature among the Tottenham substitutes.

James Maddison (shoulder) is set to miss out, while Dejan Kulusevski (knee), Pape Matar Sarr (thigh), Wilson Odobert (knee) and Xavi Simons (knee) are all unavailable.

Newcastle will be without forward Will Osula due to an injury he sustained in the Liverpool game.

Joelinton and Tino Livramento (both thigh) remain sidelined, while Dan Burn is likely out until October with an ankle problem.

Tottenham v Newcastle predicted line ups

Tottenham starting XI: Kinsky; Porro, Van de Ven, Van Hecke, Robertson; Fernandes, Tonali, Bentancur; Savio, Tel; Solanke.

Newcastle starting XI: Hornicek; Dedic, Thiaw, Botman, Hall; Gonzalez, Miley; Elanga, Willock, Barnes; Wissa.

Tottenham v Newcastle stats, Premier League form

    • There has been at least one goal in all 62 Premier League meetings between Tottenham
and Newcastle, making it the most played fixture in the competition never to finish 0-0
    • Since the start of the 2023/24 season, only West Ham (19), Wolves (15), and Aston Villa (13) have
lost more Premier League games by a margin of three or more goals than Tottenham (11)
    • Spurs have won their opening home league game in each of the last five seasons by an aggregate score of 14-1
    • This is their second-best run in such matches, winning their home opener 11 times in succession from 1923/24 to 1933/34
    • Tottenham have lost six of their last eight Premier League games against Newcastle (W1 D1) and haven’t kept a clean sheet in 14 games against the Magpies
    • Newcastle have won more Premier League games at Spurs than at any other opponent (13),
including three of their last four visits to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (L1)
    • Since the start of last season, Newcastle have dropped more points from winning positions
than any other Premier League side (29) – the Magpies went 1-0 and 2-1 ahead on matchday one before drawing 2-2 with Liverpool
    • They have won four of their last 22 away Premier League matches (D6 L12), but their
last two away wins have been in London – 2-1 at Spurs in February and 1-0 at Chelsea in March
    • Anthony Elanga has already scored more goals (1 from 2 shots) in the 2026/27 campaign than he managed in 2025/26 (0 from 17 shots)
    • Elanga made the most sprints of any Premier League winger on matchday one (23), while Marcos Senesi ranked top for Tottenham for successful passes (75), duels won (12) and tackles (5)

Where to watch Spurs v Newcastle: TV channel, live online streams

Tottenham v Newcastle kicks off at 5:30pm. It will be broadcast on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League. It will be available to stream via Sky Go.

Via Now TV, Sky Sports costs £14.99 for a day membership, £27.99 a month for a 12-month membership or £34.99 a month with no contract.

    Tottenham v Newcastle prediction

With both sides showing defensive frailties in their openers, a first Premier League goalless draw between the two looks unlikely, but an even contest that ultimately ends all square would be no surprise.
