As India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup begin to take shape, recent performances have raised crucial questions about team combination and strategic direction. Even with core players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah featured in the squad, Team India has occasionally appeared short of the seamless cohesion required to dominate major 50-over events.

Sharing his perspective on the matter, veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin provided a deep, analytical breakdown comparing the team culture under current head coach Gautam Gambhir with the framework established by his predecessor, Rahul Dravid.

Ravichandran Ashwin reveals what sets Gautam Gambhir’s system apart from Rahul Dravid’s

The contrast between the two coaching eras lies heavily in their philosophical approach to team balance and structure. While Dravid prioritized rigid structure, tactical stability, and reliance on core specialists, Gambhir’s management style lean heavily toward versatility and multi-skilled utility players.

According to Ashwin, a primary concern with the current vision is an over-reliance on “bits-and-pieces” cricketers to fill tactical gaps. This dilemma is most evident in India’s search for a reliable pace-bowling all-rounder as a backup or partner to Hardik Pandya. With Pandya’s workload carefully managed due to recurring injury concerns, options like Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shivam Dube have been brought into the fold. However, secondary fitness issues and varying skill levels leave the combination vulnerable.

“If Hardik is not there, it’s Nitish Kumar Reddy and then Shivam Dube. There is no point in harping about players that are not ready to play in your combination. If they are injured, they are injured. That’s par for the course in any sport. Look at the 2023 World Cup, which just fizzled out because Hardik wasn’t part of the combination. But the moment it fizzled out, they were not searching, and they did not try to play the sixth bowler. They skinned the cat differently and went with five bowlers,” Ashwin stated on Cricinfo.

Reflecting on how Dravid navigated similar hurdles during the 2023 ODI World Cup following Pandya’s mid-tournament injury, Ashwin pointed out that the previous management chose clarity over makeshift fixes. Instead of scrambling for secondary options who couldn’t replicate Pandya’s primary duties, Dravid’s setup accepted the constraint, backed five specialist bowlers, and maintained total role clarity for the rest of the squad. That pragmatic approach carried India all the way to the final.

Ashwin emphasized that relying too heavily on multi-utility players can undermine long-term success, particularly in formats where specialist skills dictate the outcome. Match-winners with primary expertise—whether purely with the bat or the ball—remain the bedrock of championship-winning teams.

The road to 2027: Why long-term clarity and a fixed core are crucial for Team India

To avoid mid-tournament tactical reshuffles, Ashwin believes the management must establish a core pool of 17 to 18 players immediately and commit to them over the next 14 months.

This core pool should ideally consist of:

    • Two designated wicketkeeper-batters for tactical coverage.
    • Three specialist spinners suited for varied subcontinental and global conditions.
    • Five frontline fast bowlers rotated strategically to manage workload.

Instead of constantly auditioning new talent or searching for temporary all-round solutions, the coaching staff needs to rotate within this fixed group. Doing so allows the management to test different tactical combinations while providing players with the stability required to perform under pressure.

For India to build a truly formidable squad for the 2027 World Cup, settling on role clarity and backing proven match-winners will be far more decisive than chasing short-term tactical balance.
