Speculation surrounding the futures of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma and debate over their spots in India’s 2027 ODI World Cup plans continue to run rife in Indian cricket cycles. Despite transitioning away from other formats to prioritize the 50-over game, the veteran duo faces a wave of scrutiny regarding their longevity. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, BCCI chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, and even BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia have held a non-committal stance over Kohli and Rohit’s India futures, leaving fans and pundits guessing. Amidst this tense environment, legendary India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has entered the fray, urging the team management to put an end to the unsettling rumors and back the seasoned icons unequivocally.

Ravichandran Ashwin issues a clear message to Gautam Gambhir on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s 2027 World Cup future

Speaking candidly on his Hindi YouTube channel ‘Ash ki Baat’, Ashwin expressed deep concern over the ongoing media narrative, calling the constant evaluation of the country’s two greatest modern-day batters counterproductive.

“This speculation about Rohit or Virat is not good. In all honesty, where does the speculation come from? Somewhere, it is in someone’s mind that they should not go to the World Cup. I don’t know who those people are. Some people will have that doubt, and somebody else wants them to be in the squad,” Ashwin noted.

The spin maestro firmly believes that if Gambhir and the selection committee view Rohit and Kohli as vital pillars for the upcoming campaign in South Africa, they must extend complete psychological security to them immediately.

“If you want them, decide now, and make them feel absolutely comfortable and confident over the next year. If you do not make the decision now, it becomes difficult as the same thing will keep coming back after every one or two failures,” Ashwin warned.

According to him, managing veteran players requires an atmosphere of trust, comparing the dynamic to a partnership where ‘good vibes’ from the management prevent players from playing under crippling duress.

The stark contrast in form, fitness, and the road to South Africa 2027

Ashwin didn’t mince words about the logistical and tactical necessity of having seasoned campaigners on board for a tournament held in challenging South African conditions.

“I personally think you need experienced batters to play the World Cup in South Africa,” he emphasized. However, the path ahead presents distinct challenges for both stalwarts as India builds toward the mega event.

In recent months, Kohli’s case has strengthened following a number of ODI centuries and great form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. Kohli’s supreme fitness levels and unrelenting run-scoring form make him an easier choice for the selectors to lock in early.

Conversely, speculation continues over Rohit’s fitness and form. The former India captain will be 40 by the time the 2027 World Cup comes round. While his tactical acumen and boundary-hitting prowess remain world-class, his physical longevity over a rigorous 50-over cycle remains a talking point. With upcoming ODI fixtures serving as a direct testing ground, Gambhir and Agarkar face an immediate deadline to either draw a definitive blueprint with ‘Ro-Ko’ or transition completely.
