Left-hander Ranger Suarez will take the mound for the Boston Red Sox on Sunday night as an American League All-Star.

Suarez (4-3, 2.94 ERA) will face the Los Angeles Angels as the Red Sox go for a sweep of the three-game series in Anaheim, Calif. He learned Saturday about his selection to his second All-Star Game, the first coming in 2024 as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies.

The July 14 Midsummer Classic will be a return to Philadelphia, where he spent eight seasons with the Phillies before signing a five-year, $130 million deal with the Red Sox in the offseason.

“Just something that I’m really proud of — to represent the Boston Red Sox,” Suarez said through an interpreter on Saturday.

“Maybe I’ll be able to get in and play,” Suarez added, referencing the 2024 game, which he did not enter.

His most recent start came Monday in a 6-3 win over the visiting Washington Nationals. He allowed three runs on five hits in six innings with a walk and eight strikeouts for his third consecutive quality start.

But his only previous appearance against the Angels was not a quality effort. It came on July 20, 2025, while with the Phillies. Suarez surrendered six runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings with four walks and four strikeouts.

The Angels have lost five in a row after Saturday night’s 8-1 thrashing at the hands of the Red Sox, as starter Sonny Gray held them to a run and four hits over six innings.

” … Sometimes, really, there’s nothing much you can do,” said Los Angeles manager Kurt Suzuki after the game.

The only good news for the Angels on Saturday was the All-Star Game announcement. Los Angeles outfielder Mike Trout was named a starter for the game, which will be played 40 miles from his hometown, Millville, N.J. He lives in the southern New Jersey area in the offseason.

Trout, who has 17 home runs, 36 RBIs, a .234 average and an.866 OPS in 74 games, would be the third American League player to start 11 All-Star Games for the same team. He joins Cal Ripken of the Baltimore Orioles (17th time) and George Brett of the Kansas City Royals (11 times).

“I love playing in it, but it’s an experience for my kids and family,” said Trout, who is on the injured list with a hamstring issue. “It’s going to be good to be able to stay at my house and enjoy a few days.”

He said he should be able to return to the lineup on Tuesday when the Angels begin a six-game road trip, beginning with three against the Texas Rangers.

Right-hander Ryan Johnson (1-3, 7.40) is scheduled to start for Los Angeles on Sunday night.

He was the loser in his last start on Monday night as the Angels dropped a 6-2 decision to the host Seattle Mariners.

Johnson gave up three runs (one earned), and four hits in five innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out three.

This will be the first appearance of his career against the Red Sox.
