Catch up with all the action from Manchester City vs Arsenal in the Premier League

Manchester City edged a dramatic and often chaotic contest to beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium, tightening the Premier League title race with a huge win over the leaders.

Pep Guardiola’s side found the winning moment midway through the second half, when Erling Haaland ended his recent drought to settle a very competitive contest.

The match had begun at a ferocious pace, with both sides creating chances inside the opening exchanges.

Arsenal threatened early from set-pieces, while City responded through Rayan Cherki, who struck the post after a deflected effort as the hosts began to assert themselves.

It was Cherki who made the breakthrough after 16 minutes. Picking up possession just outside the box, the Frenchman skipped beyond several challenges before calmly placing a low finish into the corner.

Arsenal’s response, however, was opportunistic. Just two minutes later, a costly error from Gianluigi Donnarumma handed the visitors a route back into the game.

Under pressure inside his own six-yard box, the goalkeeper hesitated in possession, allowing Kai Havertz to close him down and block the clearance into the net.

The equaliser shifted the tone again. Arsenal dropped deeper, inviting pressure, while City dominated possession without consistently testing David Raya.

Aside from a handful of half-chances and set-piece situations, clear opportunities were limited before the interval, and the sides went in level.

Tensions rise in the second half

After the break, City increased the tempo and began to pin Arsenal back. Jeremy Doku and Nico O’Reilly were influential down the left, while Rodri dictated play from midfield.

Arsenal, by contrast, struggled to build sustained attacks, though they remained dangerous on the counter.

The visitors came close to taking the lead just past the hour mark when Eberechi Eze struck the post from distance, before Donnarumma made amends for his earlier mistake with a sharp save to deny Havertz from close range.

City’s response was decisive. In the 65th minute, O’Reilly delivered a low cross into the box, and Haaland held off his marker before finishing clinically to restore the hosts’ advantage.

From there, the game opened up. Arsenal pushed forward in search of an equaliser, hitting the woodwork again when Gabriel’s header came back off the post.

The closing stages were played at high intensity. Tempers flared between Haaland and Gabriel, resulting in bookings for both, while City were forced into late defensive changes after Rodri limped off.

Arsenal threw everything forward in stoppage time and came agonisingly close to rescuing a point. Leandro Trossard delivered an inviting cross that found Havertz unmarked inside the area, but the forward sent his header over the bar from close range with what proved to be the final clear opportunity.

City held on through eight minutes of added time to secure a significant win, meaning they can move to the top of the pile if they beat Burnley in midweek.
