Arsenal secured their place in the Champions League semi-finals after a 0-0 draw against Sporting at the Emirates, progressing 1-0 on aggregate.

It was far from a convincing display from Mikel Arteta’s side, but their first-leg advantage proved enough to get them over the line.

While Sporting showed flashes of promise, they ultimately lacked the cutting edge required to force extra time in North London.

Cagey first half with few clear chances

The opening stages set the tone for what would become a nervy evening. Arsenal dominated possession early on, circulating the ball patiently but struggling to penetrate Sporting’s well-organised defence.

Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres both fired over from the edge of the box without seriously testing the goalkeeper early on.

Sporting, meanwhile, gradually grew into the contest and began to look more threatening on the break. Francisco Trincao and Pedro Goncalves both had half-chances, but couldn’t make anything of it.

The best opportunity of the first half fell to Geny Catamo, who met a lofted cross at the back post and struck first time across goal, only to see his effort clip the upright and bounce wide.

It was a warning sign for Arsenal, who looked increasingly uneasy as the break approached.

    Arsenal struggle after the break

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Arsenal seeing plenty of the ball but failing to translate possession into clear chances.

Gabriel Martinelli provided occasional bursts of energy down the left, while Eze continued to probe from central areas.

    Premier League leaders Arsenal

At the other end, Sporting enjoyed their best spell of sustained pressure midway through the half. Their midfield began to dictate the tempo, and crosses into the box caused momentary concern, yet they struggled to generate high-quality opportunities.

A notable chance came when Maxi Araújo drove a powerful shot narrowly wide after a slick attacking move.

As the clock ticked down, tension around the Emirates grew. Arsenal increasingly focused on controlling possession and slowing the tempo, prioritising game management over chasing a second goal in the tie.

They almost put the result beyond doubt late on when Leandro Trossard rose highest at the back post to meet a corner, only to see his header rebound off the upright.

Sporting continued to push in the closing minutes but lacked the urgency and quality needed to truly trouble Arsenal’s defence.

Their final opportunity came deep into stoppage time, when substitute Joao Simoes struck a low effort from the edge of the box that drifted narrowly into the side-netting.

Job done, but bigger tests ahead

In the end, Arsenal did just enough. It was not a performance that will live long in the memory, but it demonstrated the kind of control often required in knockout football.

Arteta’s side now move into the semi-finals for the second consecutive season, though a significant step up in performance will be needed if they are to go further.
