Interim head coach Michael Carrick’s switch to a system more familiar to Manchester United predecessor Ruben Amorim helped the Red Devils beat Brentford at Old Trafford and close in on clinching Champions League qualification.
Casemiro headed United in front in the 11th minute and Benjamin Sesko struck two minutes before half-time as Carrick’s side ensured they will need a maximum of two points from their final four matches of the season to return to elite European competition for the first time since 2023/24.

Carrick replaced Amad Diallo with Noussair Mazraoui at half-time and appeared to switch to a back five, leading to Brentford exerting less pressure despite hitting a post through Dango Ouattara’s header when a corner was flicked on.

Mathias Jensen replied with a spectacular long-range strike three minutes from time and Brentford pushed in vain for an added-time equaliser as their run of five Premier League draws came to a spirited end hindered by wasteful finishing.

United captain Bruno Fernandes teed up Sesko’s goal to move to 19 assists in the 2025/26 Premier League – one behind Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry’s all-time records in a top flight season.
Analysis: Man United tactics pay off for Carrick
Former United midfielder Carrick has picked up 29 points from 13 league games in charge and transformed United’s season since joining in January to replace Amorim, whose perceived tactical rigidity was much maligned.
This result – and, perhaps, the change of formation – will surely strengthen the former Middlesbrough manager’s prospects of being appointed on a permanent basis.
“The change tactically has just completely changed the flow of the game,” former United captain Gary Neville told Sky Sports during the second half.
“It’s what Carrick will have wanted. It’s a brave move from Michael Carrick because if this change went wrong, you could already see the headlines… they do look like they’ve prevented Brentford from going through them as easily and still counter-attacking.
“It’s very much the same system Amorim used.”
Man United vs Brentford: Blow for Bees’ European bid
United would have scored earlier but for Sepp van den Berg clearing Amad’s finish off the line following an electric run by the midfielder and goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher clawing Harry Maguire’s header from Bruno Fernandes’ cross away.
Casemiro, who is in his final season at Old Trafford, then met Maguire’s header at the back post to nod in the opener.
Brentford, who conceded from a corner for only the third time this season, were denied a swift reply when Luke Shaw’s attempted sliding intervention did enough to distract Igor Thiago from connecting with Keane Lewis-Potter’s low cross in front of goal.
With 21 league goals this season, Thiago has six more than anyone in the division except leading marksman Erling Haaland, who has 24 for Manchester City.
The Brazil striker spurned another presentable first-half chance to add to that tally, though, by dithering in space inside the box as Keith Andrews’ team remained ninth, at least a point off the likely European qualification places.
