Rajasthan Royals kept their IPL 2026 campaign alive in dramatic fashion after defeating Mumbai Indians by 30 runs at the Wankhede Stadium to seal the fourth and final playoff spot. But while the celebrations were in full swing, RR skipper Riyan Parag made a startling revelation about his fitness ahead of the Eliminator.

Parag, who returned to the playing XI after missing Rajasthan’s previous game against the Lucknow Super Giants due to a hamstring injury, admitted after the match that he was far from fully fit and was not even expected to feature in the contest.

The Royals captain played a short but impactful innings of 14 runs from just eight balls as RR posted a challenging total of 205. However, throughout Mumbai’s chase, Parag appeared uncomfortable on the field and was seen walking gingerly during several moments of the innings.

Speaking honestly after helping RR qualify for the playoffs, Parag revealed the extent of his injury concerns. The 24-year-old did not hide the seriousness of the injury situation and even suggested that he had gone against expectations to take the field.

“Yeah, I’m definitely not fit. I was not supposed to play today, and I’m not supposed to play another game this season,” said Parag after the game.

Despite those comments, the young skipper quickly reassured RR fans when asked about his availability for the Eliminator clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

“Yeah, of course,” Parag replied confidently when questioned about whether he would take the field in the knockout fixture.

His determination highlighted the importance of the game for Rajasthan, who entered the final league match knowing that only a win could keep their IPL hopes alive.

Rajasthan Royals recover after late-season collapse

Rajasthan’s qualification looked unlikely just a few days ago after the team suffered three consecutive defeats at a critical stage of the tournament. However, victories in their final two league games helped them complete a late comeback and secure a playoff berth on the final day of the league stage.

Even after qualification, Parag admitted the Royals were disappointed with how they handled several situations earlier in the season. The RR captain also stressed that the team needs to improve quickly before entering the pressure of knockout cricket.

“We should have qualified way earlier. We left it a little too late. I think we left a lot on the table. I feel we’re picking up the slack after losing three games in a row. Hopefully we learn from all our mistakes and put up a better show,” he added.

Tactical decisions pay off for RR

Rajasthan’s win over Mumbai was shaped by a number of brave tactical calls from Parag. One of the most surprising decisions came when Jofra Archer was promoted to No. 7 in the batting order before later being brought back into the attack at a key stage to dismiss Hardik Pandya.

Mumbai threatened to pull off a stunning chase through Suryakumar Yadav, who scored 60 off 42 balls, and Pandya’s explosive 34 from 15 deliveries. But RR’s bowlers held their nerve to close out the game. Parag explained that fearless decision-making has been central to his captaincy style this season. He said: “I’ve taken a lot of brave calls this season. That’s how I like to lead. You have to take your chances after thinking deeply about the situation.”

The RR skipper also praised youngsters Yash Raj Punja and Brijesh Sharma for stepping up under pressure during Mumbai’s chase. Parag highlighted Punja’s remarkable rise from being a net bowler to becoming one of the side’s leading spin options this season. He also applauded Brijesh for bouncing back strongly after difficult outings earlier in the tournament and expressed hope that the young bowlers could continue delivering in the playoffs as Rajasthan chase their second IPL title.
