The world of Indian cricket is never short of drama, and the latest chapter features an explosive verbal volley from former speedster S Sreesanth. In a candid and fiery interview, the ex-pacer took aim at India’s current head coach, Gautam Gambhir, igniting a fresh debate over the team’s leadership structure. Sreesanth’s remarks come at a sensitive time for the national side, following a string of highly visible and historic Test series defeats at home. Rather than holding back, the former bowler used the platform to question Gambhir’s rigid coaching philosophy and call for a dramatic shift in how the Indian dressing room is managed.

S Sreesanth takes aim at Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir with sharp remarks

Speaking on The Lallantop, Sreesanth explicitly detailed his fundamental disagreements with Gambhir’s management style, pointing to recent red-ball failures as proof of a deeper systemic issue. Under Gambhir’s tenure, India suffered a historic home Test series loss against New Zealand in late 2024, followed by another rare home series defeat to South Africa in early 2025. According to Sreesanth, the root cause lies in an environment of fear and over-management rather than tactical shortcomings.

“Change the coach, friend. India needs a mentor, not a coach,” Sreesanth stated bluntly. He criticized Gambhir for putting excessive, counterproductive pressure on international athletes who already face immense scrutiny. Sreesanth argued that elite players do not need heavy-handed instruction on how to play, but rather an empathetic guide who understands the emotional highs and lows of the sport.

“You have to be a brother first. You can’t just laugh when you win and get angry when you lose,” he added, directly challenging the coach’s temperament.

Why Team India needs an MS Dhoni style mentor over a traditional coach?

To contrast Gambhir’s high-pressure environment, Sreesanth invoked the legendary leadership of MS Dhoni, suggesting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should pivot toward a mentorship model rather than a traditional head coach setup. Sreesanth highlighted that Dhoni’s iconic success was built on creating a relaxed, mentally liberated dressing room where players felt secure enough to express themselves. He firmly believes that “Team India needs a mentor like Dhoni” to bring back that calm, match-winning mentality.

Furthermore, Sreesanth dismantled the narrative that Gambhir deserved sole credit for India’s recent T20 World Cup 2026 triumph. He insisted that the victory belonged squarely to the players who executed under immense pressure on the field, rather than the tactician in the dugout. Sreesanth pointed out that individual brilliance and on-field leadership were the true catalysts for the trophy.

“When the team won the World Cup, all the credit went to Gambhir. But if Sanju Samson hadn’t been there, Suryakumar Yadav hadn’t captained, and the bowling changes hadn’t been made at the right time, would we have won the match?” Sreesanth questioned.

He concluded by suggesting that if India must have a coach, they should look to figures like Ashish Nehra, who keep the atmosphere light and collaborative, rather than rigid and tense.
