The 28th match of Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 delivered high-octane drama at Grand Prairie Stadium as the table-topping San Francisco Unicorns cruised to an emphatic six-wicket victory over the Seattle Orcas. In a high-scoring thriller on July 11, 2026, the Unicorns showcased exactly why they hold the number one spot in the tournament, hunting down a steep target of 191 with a whole over to spare. The marquee clash belonged to New Zealand’s powerhouse opener Finn Allen, whose explosive batting anchored a flawless chase, neutralizing a fiercely competitive first-innings total from Seattle.

Seattle Orcas put on a formidable score in the first innings

Opting to bat first, the Seattle Orcas overcame early setbacks to post a highly competitive 190/7 in their allotted 20 overs. The Unicorns’ bowling attack struck early blows, with Matthew Short dismissing opener Tim Seifert for just 9, while Xavier Bartlett bowled a beautiful spell to clean up Shehan Jayasuriya for 16. Bartlett proved to be the pick of the frontline quicks, finishing with impressive figures of 3 for 36.

Despite being reduced to 34/3 in the fourth over, the Orcas mounted a spectacular middle-order resurgence. Matthew Breetzke led the charge with a blistering 55 off just 29 deliveries, punishing the San Francisco bowlers with five boundaries and four towering sixes. He found an aggressive partner in Shimron Hetmyer, who contributed a quick-fire 36 off 21 balls. The duo injected much-needed momentum, taking the score to 99 before Hetmyer was caught off Brody Couch. Orcas captain Marcus Stoinis then stabilized the back end of the innings, grinding out a crucial 49 off 35 balls. Despite a brief double-wicket hiccup in the 14th over, Stoinis and Cameron Gannon (15*) ensured the scoreboard kept ticking. For the Unicorns, left-arm spinner Hassan Khan was the defensive hero, delivering an incredibly tight, economical spell of 4-0-25-0 to prevent a total well beyond 200.

Finn Allen stars in San Francisco Unicorns’ emphatic victory over Seattle Orcas

Faced with a daunting required run rate of 9.55 per over, the San Francisco Unicorns made their intentions clear from the outset. While young opener Lhuan-dre Pretorius departed for 14, his exit only cleared the stage for the Allen show. The Kiwi international launched a brutal assault on the Orcas’ bowling unit, reaching a sensational half-century in just 25 deliveries. Allen’s breathtaking 65 off 31 balls, sparked by five fours and four massive sixes, completely shifted the momentum and broke the back of the chase.

By the time Allen was dismissed by Gannon in the 11th over, the Unicorns were comfortably placed at 108/2. Skipper Matthew Short anchored the subsequent phase with a sensible 43 off 36 balls, while Sanjay Krishnamurthi chipped in with a vital 26. When Short fell in the 17th over at 155/4, the Orcas sensed a small window of opportunity. However, any hopes of a Seattle comeback were swiftly extinguished by an astonishing cameo from Hassan. Coming in with a license to thrill, Hassan smashed an unbeaten 36 off a mere 10 balls at a staggering strike rate of 360.00. Partnered with Aaron Hardie, Hassan struck the winning runs in the 19th over to finish at 194/4, sealing a clinical pursuit that keeps the Unicorns firmly entrenched at the top of the MLC standings.
