India’s disappointing start to the two-match T20I series against Ireland has sparked fresh debate over the team’s batting combination. The Men in Blue suffered their first-ever T20I defeat against Ireland, going down by 34 runs at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast after being bowled out for 148 in 18.5 overs while chasing a daunting target.
Among the biggest disappointments was opening batter Sanju Samson, who managed just five runs from four deliveries before falling cheaply. With young sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi waiting for his opportunity on the bench, former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar believes the experienced wicketkeeper-batter can no longer take his place in the side for granted.

Speaking after India’s defeat, Manjrekar highlighted the increasing competition for opening spots in India’s T20I setup and suggested that Samson needs to be mindful of the pressure coming from teenage prodigy Suryavanshi. However, the former Indian cricketer also clarified that he does not believe Suryavanshi’s inclusion alone would have changed the outcome of the opening T20I. According to Manjrekar, India’s steep chase and the challenging batting conditions meant that even the Rajasthan Royals (RR) youngster would have found it difficult to make a decisive impact.
“But Sanju Samson needs to be careful because Vaibhav Suryavanshi is breathing down his and Abhishek Sharma’s neck. I think he would have done what Abhishek did, slightly better, maybe. A chase where you had to do everything in the first six overs. You had to carry that momentum for the rest of the overs as well. So he could have made things a little easier in the chase, but the target became just too big, and conditions weren’t easy. And you saw in the tri-series in Dambulla as well how the sixes weren’t coming as often to him,” Manjrekar said on Sony Sports Network.

Ireland scripted history by defeating India for the first time in T20 internationals after eight consecutive defeats. The hosts produced a disciplined all-round display, with Matthew Hollard and Matthew Humphreys claiming three wickets each to dismantle India’s batting lineup.
India’s chase never gathered momentum as wickets fell at regular intervals. Samson departed early, while Abhishek Sharma also failed to provide the explosive start expected at the top. Despite a few brief partnerships in the middle overs, the visitors were eventually bowled out for 148 in 18.5 overs, handing Shreyas Iyer a disappointing start to his captaincy stint.
With the series on the line, India, under new captain Shreyas Iyer, will be hoping for a much-improved batting performance in the second and final T20I, while the team management faces an intriguing selection dilemma over whether to hand Suryavanshi his long-awaited international debut.
