Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the horror directors behind Scream 5 (Radio Silence), are reportedly signed on to work on a film adaptation of the book series Choose Your Own Adventure for 20th Century Fox. The Disaster Artist’s screenwriter, Tom Bissell, will pen the screenplay, yet plot details have yet to be released.
The original gamebook series was first published in 1979, with the first instalment, The Cave of Time, written by Edward Packard. The creative premise allows readers to take on the role of each story’s protagonist, thanks to a second-person format, where they can decide the fate of the central character. 1979 and 1998 saw over 250 million copies of the books sold in more than 40 languages.
There are a total of 184 books in the series.
Reports are yet to confirm the project’s genre, with clues being Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett’s history in horror filmmaking and some of the books dipping into sci-fi, fantasy, survival and horror. All these details come forth to paint a picture which slots fairly nicely into horror of today, with past examples such as Truth or Dare, Whistle, and Ouija all focusing on a group of pals fighting against a curse linked to an entity which can assign distinct traumas and troubles (and demises) for each member of the group.
Meanwhile, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are known for their work on Devil’s Due, the fan favourite Ready or Not and its sequel, the 2020s revival of Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s original Scream franchise from the 1990s and early 2000s (V and VI) and Abigail. Their 2011-founded production company, Radio Silence, also holds credits on the anthology horror series, v/h/s, Southbound and Phobias, with additional creative and founding members including Justin Martinez and Chad Villella.
