Captain America star Sebastian Stan has teased DC Comics fans with a hint at his upcoming role in the sequel to Matt Reeves’ hit film The Batman.
The Batman saw Twilight star Robert Pattinson take on the role of the Dark Knight, the ninth actor to play the superhero in a live-action appearance as a whole and the seventh to do so in a feature film. Additional stars included Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell.
Farrell, Serkis and Wright reprise their roles in the film, alongside new recruits Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch.
Reeves’ take on the comics saw Batman, real name Bruce Wayne, struggling to maintain his vigilante alter ego to clean up Gotham’s crime while keeping his family’s reputation and responsibilities afloat, all just in his second year fighting crime. Meanwhile, a mysterious justice-seeker, known as the Riddler, takes to his own path of taking down more corrupt, higher-up criminals.
Following audience acclaim and critical success, a sequel, The Batman: Part II, was announced in April 2022 and originally slated for an October 2025 release. However, the project has been pushed back until October 2027, with Pattinson reprising his role and Stan’s casting being teased via social media by Reeves himself.
The actor has recently shared his anticipation to appear as Harvey Dent, Gotham’s former district attorney, who takes on the supervillain persona of Two-Face following an accident leaving half his face disfigured. Two-Face is characterised by his appearance, originally the result of mob boss Sal Maroni attacking him with acid, and his trust in fate, such as letting a coin toss make major decisions for him. Contemporary comic stories characterise Dent as suffering from dissociative identity disorder, with Two-Face being his other personality and emphasising his former alliance with Batman.
”’I’m excited, I’m nervous and trying to keep surprising myself,” Stan recently shared when asked about the role, teasing his character’s persona by stating he “takes multiple roles” in Reeves’ sequel.
Stan has recently appeared in the Palme d’Or-winning film Fjord by director Cristian Mungiu, alongside Renate Reinsve. The two stars play a Romanian-Norwegian couple who come to struggle with cultural norms.
