In today’s day and age, people have found different ways of using AI to produce art, videos, and even written text. However, using these methods in a professional setting has proven controversial, especially as it risks taking work from real artists and writers. Recently, one prominent Hollywood figure, Seth Rogen, has weighed in on the subject.
Seth Rogen Recently Had A Few Choice Words For Writers Who Used AI In Their Craft
Rogen is a Canadian actor, writer, and filmmaker. He first became known to audiences acting on Freaks and Geeks in 1999.
Over the years, Rogen has appeared in a number of prominent films, such as The 40-Year-Old Virgin, This Is the End, The Interview, and Superbad. He has also served in a number of behind-the-scenes roles in projects including Preacher and The Boys.
Recently, Rogen spoke with Brut while at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. During the conversation, he weighed in on the proliferation of AI being used to help people write. For his part, Rogen felt that people who use the technology to write up a script should look for another line of work.
Rogen Also Shared A Simple Reason As To Why He Wouldn’t Want To Use AI In His Own Scripts
As Rogen explained, “I don’t understand what it’s supposed to do. Every time I see a video on Instagram that’s like, ‘Hollywood is cooked,’ what follows is, like, the most stupid dog s*** I’ve ever seen in my life. “And if your instinct is to use AI and not go through that process, you shouldn’t be a writer, because then you’re not writing. Go do something else.”
On his end, Rogen shared that he wouldn’t like to use shortcuts to create a new script because he genuinely enjoys the writing process. He shared, “If you don’t want to go through the process, you shouldn’t be a writer. The idea of a tool that makes me write less is not appealing to me, because I like writing.”
As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, Rogen was attending Cannes in support of Tangles, Leah Nelson’s latest animated feature. Rogen serves as a producer of the film. In addition, it also features the voices of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Sarah Silverman, and Bowen Yang. The story revolves around an artist and activist, Sarah, in 1990s-era San Francisco, who learns that her mother is losing her memories due to Alzheimer’s.
With the post being shared on social media, many fans shared their support of Rogen’s viewpoint. A few shared other reasons why they didn’t like to see AI in writing. Some comments included:
- “OMG watching people have to make an argument for why the human experience should remain human is becoming so painful. This should not be up for debate.”
- “Writing is like a sport. Athletes enjoy their professional sport. So do Writers.”
- “AI is great for the untalented to cosplay as someone with talent.”
- “Ai bros have zero understanding that the process is EVERYTHING.”
