Fans have followed Sheinelle Jones on Today over the past few years, seeing her go through emotional and even tragic moments. Recently, during an episode of the show, she noted that one holiday was especially hard for her this year. During the share, however, she revealed something that gave her comfort through it all.
Sheinelle Jones Made An Emotional Share During A Recent Episode Of Today With Jenna & Sheinelle
Jones is known for her work with NBC News, having joined Today in 2014. Recently, she became a co-host of the show’s fourth hour alongside Jenna Bush Hager, which has since been renamed Today with Jenna & Sheinelle.
In her personal life, Jones had married Uche Ojeh in 2007. The two would share three children, Kayin and twins Uche and Clara.
Back in 2025, it was announced on the show that Uche had passed away from aggressive glioblastoma, of which he had been diagnosed with in 2023. At the time, Sheinelle had stepped away from the show to help take care of him.
This past Monday, while co-hosting with Jenna, Sheinelle recently opened up about celebrating her first Mother’s Day since losing the love of her life. Opening up, she admitted, “I’ll be honest with you, it was kind of tough for me.”
Sheinelle felt that, while holidays are always hard after such a loss, some can still be shocking. She explained, “I think when you have firsts — and Mother’s Day was a first for me since Uche passed — you fortify your heart, right? Christmas and Easter, you kind of fortify yourself. But there’s some holidays that you don’t see coming that are harder than you think. Mother’s Day was brutal.”
Jenna Bush Hager Felt That Her Co-Host Reflected What Mother’s Day Was Truly About
Jenna agreed, noting, “Well, because really, he was probably the one that did everything.” Jones reflected, “He would be the one, correct. ‘Guys, we gotta get some cards!’ So I realized, ‘Oh, we don’t have that.’ I think we all quietly realized it.”
Jones found herself finding comfort and pride in her children’s accomplishments, saying that they were her real “Mother’s Day gift.” This included her daughter Clara’s recital, in which she did a little red carpet reporting. She noted, “I was teary just because she did such a good job.”
Jones continued, talking about her daughter’s dance class and her son Kayin having a game following an injury. Despite what she’s endured, she found these things to be a “silver lining.” She added, “I’m like, ‘OK, it’s gonna be OK.’”
Jenna felt that this was what the holiday was all about. As she shared, “Which is so ironic you found your joy in your kids, watching them and being proud of them, which is what Mother’s Day really should be about.” Sheinelle agreed, feeling that she “stuck the landing” of the holiday.
