The wait is finally over. DreamWorks Animation has dropped the first official trailer for Shrek 5, and it arrived today, June 16, 2026, bringing the beloved green ogre back to the big screen for the first time in over 15 years.
The trailer opens exactly the way fans hoped it would, with a glowing storybook and a narrator declaring: “Once upon a time, a hideous ogre and a delusional donkey embarked on a journey to the magical city of Further Further Away.” It is a confident, self-aware callback to everything that made the original Shrek franchise so irresistible, and it immediately signals that DreamWorks knows exactly what this film needs to be.
Comedy legends Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz all return as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona, and they are joined by an exciting new generation of characters. Emmy-winning superstar Zendaya voices Felicia, Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, who was teased in the February 2025 announcement but is notably absent from this first trailer, suggesting DreamWorks is keeping her role a closely guarded secret for now. Marcello Hernandez and Skyler Gisondo voice the sons Fergus and Farkle, rounding out the Ogre family. And yes, the Gingerbread Man is back, apparently getting “caked up like a friggin bakery.”
The film is directed by Shrek franchise veterans Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, alongside co-director Brad Ableson, with a screenplay by Michael McCullers. Produced by Chris Meledandri and Gina Shay, the film follows Shrek and Donkey on a whirlwind big-city adventure to Further Further Away, with the whole family getting roped in along the way. The trailer ends with the gang locked up in a cell as Donkey treats everyone to a spirited rendition of Roxanne.
