Cricket South Africa (CSA) has officially announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against India, set to be played between April 17 and April 27. While regular skipper Laura Wolvaardt will continue to lead the side, the absence of experienced all-rounder Marizanne Kapp remains a major talking point.

Why is Marizanne Kapp missing in South Africa’s T20I squad?

Kapp, one of South Africa’s most reliable performers across formats, is still recovering from an illness that has kept her out of action since February. She last featured for the Proteas during the home series against Pakistan and has since missed the tour of New Zealand as well. Her continued absence is a significant setback, especially with the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup just around the corner.

The upcoming series against India is particularly important for South Africa as it serves as their final competitive assignment before heading to England for the global tournament in June. Without Kapp’s experience and balance, the team will need others to step up and fill the void she leaves behind.

Despite this, the squad largely remains unchanged from the one that toured New Zealand. The management appears to be backing continuity while also making a couple of strategic additions. The team includes a mix of experienced campaigners like Suné Luus, Chloé Tryon and Ayabonga Khaka, along with emerging talents who will be eager to make an impact.

One of the key inclusions is Tebogo Macheke, a 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batter who has earned her maiden international call-up. She replaces the injured Karabo Meso, who has been ruled out due to a wrist issue. Another notable return is that of Eliz-Mari Marx, who comes back into the T20I setup after more than a year, replacing seamer Masabata Klaas.

These changes indicate that South Africa are not only focusing on immediate results but also looking to build squad depth ahead of the World Cup.

Alongside changes in the playing squad, Cricket South Africa has also confirmed adjustments within the coaching staff. Several members, including batting coach Baakier Abrahams, fielding coach Bongani Ndaba and strength and conditioning coach Zane Webster, will step down at the end of the current season. In their place, interim appointments have been made, with Andrew Puttick taking over batting duties, Mduduzi Mbhatha handling fielding, and Tumi Masekela overseeing fitness.

Laura Wolvaardt (captain), Anneke Bosch, Tazmin Brits, Nadine de Klerk, Annerie Dercksen, Ayanda Hlubi, Sinalo Jafta, Ayabonga Khaka, Sune Luus, Tebogo Macheke, Eliz-Mari Marx, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Kayla Reyneke, Tumi Sekhukhune, Chloe Tryon.

Harmanpreet Kaur to lead Team India

India, on the other hand, will arrive with strong momentum, having recently secured a convincing T20I series win over Australia. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, with Smriti Mandhana as her deputy, the Indian side will pose a serious challenge to the hosts. The inclusion of Anushka Sharma, who impressed in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), adds further depth to their lineup.

The five-match series will be played across Durban, Johannesburg, and Benoni, offering varied conditions that will test both teams. With both sides eyeing the upcoming World Cup, this series is more than just a bilateral contest – it’s a crucial opportunity to fine-tune combinations and build confidence.
