Before Stephen Colbert took over hosting duties on The Late Show, viewers saw David Letterman in the role. Recently, as Colbert’s show is set to come to an end, Letterman made his return to the show. At the moment, he helped his outgoing successor get revenge with an act involving a few choice words, office chairs, and some wedding cake.
David Letterman Looked Back On His Own History With The Late Show
CBS previously announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would be coming to an end, with the network retiring the show’s format. The final episode is set to air on May 21, 2026.
Colbert has hosted the show since 2015, having been announced in the role the year before. At the time, he took over from David Letterman, who had previously hosted The Late Show, starting in 1993.
Recently, Letterman returned to The Late Show, during the May 14 episode, allowing him to meet up with Colbert. Together, they decided to give the show a special sendoff involving a little property damage.
Before this, Letterman made it clear that he agreed with critics who spoke out against the cancellation. As he shared, “I have every right to be p***** off, so I’ll be p***** off here a little bit.”
Letterman reflected on his own history with the show. He shared, “Because this theater, you folks wouldn’t be in this theater if it weren’t for me, and Stephen wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for me.”
The Big Moment Started With The Top Of Ed Sullivan Theater & Ended With The CBS Logo
“And we rebuilt this theater, and then Stephen came in, and look at this? It’s like the Bellagio. But, listen, as we all understand, you can take a man’s show, you can’t take a man’s voice, so that’s the good news from me.”
He also expressed concern for Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel. This caused Colbert to joke, “We’ve got a plan to put them in a captive breeding program.”

Letterman then got his “revenge” on the network by bringing some of the show’s furniture to the top of New York City’s Ed Sullivan Theater. He tossed it off the roof with Colbert. Chairs and couches land a CBS Eye logo on the street below. This was followed by watermelons and wedding cake.
With the moment being shared on the show’s YouTube page, many fans shared their reactions to the hosts’ bit of revenge. A few were especially happy to see Letterman back and with the same spirit as always. Some comments included:
- “Letterman made it feel like he never left.”
- “Watching this I was suddenly back in the 90s watching this with my father as he laughed along with Dave.”
- “I think that’s why this made me cry. Nostalgia for what has turned out to be the good old days.”
- “That cake in slow motion at the end was like a firework explosion going off..!!”
