India‘s fielding standards have once again come under the spotlight after legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar delivered a strong message following the team’s recent white-ball assignments. The former India captain believes fielding can no longer be treated as a secondary skill and has urged the selectors to take strict action against players who consistently fail to meet the required standards. His remarks come amid growing concerns over India’s declining fielding performances across formats, with dropped catches and costly errors becoming a recurring theme in recent months.

Sunil Gavaskar calls for tough selection policy

Gavaskar did not hold back while assessing India’s fielding standards, insisting that players who are merely average in the field should not be guaranteed a place in the side. Writing for Sportstar, the batting legend stressed that captains should not be forced to protect weak fielders by constantly adjusting field placements.

“It’s mandatory that if a player is an average fielder, he has to be shown the door. There is simply no way a captain has to hide three or four players, hoping the ball won’t go anywhere near them,” Gavaskar wrote.

His comments underline the increasing importance of athleticism and sharp fielding in modern cricket, where saving even a handful of runs or taking a difficult catch can completely alter the outcome of a match. Gavaskar’s remarks reflect the belief that fielding should be considered a key selection criterion alongside batting and bowling.

India’s recent fielding struggles under scrutiny

India’s fielding has drawn widespread criticism over the past several months, with repeated lapses proving costly in international cricket. Although the team completed a 3-0 T20I series sweep over Zimbabwe in July 2026, the victories were overshadowed by multiple dropped catches, misfields and missed run-out opportunities.

Those concerns had already surfaced during India’s white-ball series against Ireland and England earlier in the year. In both contests, sloppy fielding allowed opponents extra lives and valuable runs, contributing significantly to disappointing series defeats.

The problems became even more evident during the 2026 T20 World Cup. India finished the tournament with the highest number of dropped catches among all participating teams, putting down 13 opportunities. The repeated errors raised questions about concentration, preparation and execution under pressure, prompting criticism from experts and members of the coaching setup.

For a side once regarded as one of the world’s finest fielding units, the recent decline has been difficult to ignore.

    Numbers reveal worrying decline

The statistics paint a concerning picture of India’s fielding regression over the last few years. During a recent Test series against England, India’s catching efficiency fell to just 66.2%, with the team dropping 23 of the 45 catching opportunities that came their way.

That figure placed India 10th among the 12 Test-playing nations in catching efficiency at the time, highlighting how far the team had slipped from the high standards it had set during the previous decade.

India had earned praise in earlier years for transforming into one of the most athletic teams in world cricket, with exceptional fielders regularly turning matches through brilliant catches, direct hits and boundary saves. However, recent performances suggest those standards have declined, making Gavaskar’s criticism particularly significant.

With important international assignments still to come, the Indian team management faces increasing pressure to address the issue. Gavaskar’s call for stricter accountability could reignite the debate over whether fielding alone should influence selection decisions as India looks to restore the sharpness that once defined its success.
