Talia Ryder has replaced Sophie Thatcher for Mr and Mrs Smith, as the show’s second season enters production. Ryder (Honey Don’t!, Dumb Money) will be the new lead, alongside Anora’s Mark Eydelshteyn.
Whilst the Prime Video show’s first season was set in New York, season two will take place in Los Angeles. The California Film Commission provided a $22.4m tax credit to assist in the relocation.
Ryder and Eydelshteyn will take over from Maya Erskine and Donald Glover, whose characters’ fates are unknown after the first season’s cliffhanger ending. Variety reported in 2024 that season two will have an anthology format, without a focus on the previous leads.
Apart from Ryder and Eydelshteyn, no further casting announcements have been made. But fans speculate a star-studded list of guests. Season one featured John Turturro, Paul Dano, Sarah Paulson and Ron Perlman, amongst others. Amazon Prime Video have declined to comment on the casting change.
Glover, alongside Francesca Sloane, created the series. It won two Emmy awards from 16 nominations. Inspired by the 2005 film of the same name, production of the second season faced multiple delays. The show is produced by Amazon, MGM Studios and New Regency.
Synopsis | Two strangers independently agree to become secret agents for a mysterious organisation under cover as a married couple using the names “John” and “Jane” Smith. The couple must work through missions as their espionage skills and developing relationship are put to the test. All instructions are received from an anonymous source via text.
Mr. And Mrs. Smith is now streaming on Prime Video.
