The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast dropped a short question on Instagram this week, and it’s turning into something more interesting than it first appears.

“Alright Quaids, who else has some alts to pitch??” That’s the whole post.

Eight words. Two question marks. And a nickname for the audience that raises its own questions.

“Quaids” is apparently what the show calls its listeners. It’s the kind of in-community label that takes hold when a podcast builds a real following. It might be a nod to Randy Quaid. It could be Dennis Quaid. The podcast hasn’t explained it publicly.

The “alts to pitch” part is where things get interesting for anyone familiar with comedy writing. “Alts” are alternative pitches – other versions of a joke, a character, or a bit. Asking the audience to pitch them suggests there’s a segment already running inside the show. The hosts want listeners to riff on it. That treats the audience as collaborators. Not something most podcasts bother with.

The Lonely Island – Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone – built their reputation on comedy that rewards paying close attention. The trio made their names through digital shorts on Saturday Night Live, scoring hits like “I’m on a Boat” and “Like a Boss.” They went on to make films and albums, keeping their comedy sharp through years of absurdist character work. Samberg is also known for his lead role in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Schaffer has worked as a director on a range of projects. Taccone has stayed active through writing and acting.

Seth Meyers brings his own angle to the mix. The Late Night with Seth Meyers host spent years at SNL before landing his NBC desk. He’s built a reputation for finding the weirder corners of a conversation. Pairing him with The Lonely Island makes a lot of sense.

Listeners are being invited to pitch alternatives within a bit the show has already built. The audience plays by the show’s rules. They just get to play too.

The Instagram post pulled in about 1,100 likes. The invitation is open, and the comment section is waiting.

What they’re pitching alternatives for hasn’t been revealed. That part is still a blank. Maybe it’ll show up in the next episode. Maybe it’s already recorded and the call-out is part of the bit itself. With The Lonely Island involved, both options feel equally plausible.

No new episode date has been announced alongside the post. For now, the Quaids have their assignment.
