Welcome back, Cal Raleigh. The Big Dumper returned to the lineup after missing a month with an oblique strain and delivered a go-ahead hit against the Orioles last night.
1. Lowe wins it for Pittsburgh
The Pirates immediately found themselves in a 4-0 hole on Tuesday against the A’s. Pittsburgh chipped away at the margin throughout the game, finally tying it on a Bryan Reynolds home run in the seventh inning. It was Reynolds’ second long ball of the night. Brandon Lowe gave the Pirates their first lead in the ninth inning, pulling an Elvis Alvarado slider over the right-field wall for a go-ahead homer. The second baseman has 18 home runs across 299 plate appearances in his first year with the team. He’s on track to top 30 homers for the third season, and he has an outside shot to reach 40 for the first time.
2. Giants/Braves suspended, will resume Wednesday
Last night’s Giants vs. Braves matchup got off to a roaring start, with Atlanta erasing an early deficit, only to give the lead right back to San Francisco. Catcher Drake Baldwin homered in his first at-bat after a lengthy injury absence. The skies opened up during the second inning. What was supposed to be a brief delay turned into a washout. “Atlanta is a very challenging weather city for us,” said MLB vice president of umpire operations Matt McKendry, relayed by Matt Bowman of MLB.com. “What was showing up on radar didn’t match what we were actually seeing there at the ballpark.” The clubs will resume Tuesday’s game at 1 pm CT today. Wednesday’s regularly scheduled matchup will be at 6:15 pm CT.
3. Ashby reaches double-digit wins
Brewers left-hander Aaron Ashby wasn’t at his best on Tuesday, allowing a game-tying run in the seventh inning against the Guardians. Garrett Mitchell had his back, though. The outfielder slugged a 440-foot homer to right-center in the bottom of the frame. Abner Uribe and Trevor Megill held the lead, which resulted in Ashby’s league-leading 10th victory. Guardians righty Gavin Williams will have a chance to match Ashby on Wednesday. White Sox right-hander Davis Martin was crushed for nine earned runs on Tuesday in his bid to reach 10 wins.
