Viewers recently saw The Pitt wrap up its second season, with another on the horizon. Meanwhile, one group of characters has already proved popular with fans: the night shift. In fact, some fans would like to see them get their own series. Recently, a series showrunner has already talked about the possibility of a spin-off.
Fans Have Already Grown Attached To The ‘Nightcrawlers’ On The Pitt
The Pitt is a medical drama revolving around the emergency department staff of the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Each episode is set in real time, effectively showcasing an hour of the work shift.
The series originally made its debut on Max, later HBO Max, in early 2025. The series has since been renewed for a third season, having recently premiered its second season earlier this year.
Fans of the series have particularly grown attached to the cast’s night shift, whom Shawn Hatosy’s Abbot calls the “nightcrawlers.” Notably, as they’ve been getting more focus on the show, fans have shown interest in them getting their own show, especially as the second season recently wrapped up.
In fact, executive producer R. Scott Gemmill was asked about the possibility of a spin-off when discussing the second season finale. Speaking with TV Insider, he admitted he was also a fan of the group, noting, “I love the night shift group as well.”
However, Gemmill was unsure right now if they would get their own series. He shared, “Whether there’ll ever be a spinoff, who knows? Anything’s possible.”
R. Scott Gemmill Also Assured That The Crew Is Also Fond Of The Night Shift
However, Gemmill assured that they wouldn’t be going away anytime soon. He added, “But yeah, we like seeing them, and it adds a sense of authenticity to the show and introduces some other characters. And yeah, we like to keep them alive.”
In the first season, this crew was made up of Abbot, Shen, and Ellis. By the second season, they were joined by Meto and Crus.
Meanwhile, while Gemmill seemed interested, the outlet also wondered about Hatosy’s own feelings. He shared, “If it makes sense, for sure. But I don’t think that’s something that’s going to happen. But I think, yeah, if it made sense, for sure.”
“I love the character. The character has changed my life and people have been really accepting of the character and he’s got a lot of dimensions and he’s charming and he’s flirtatious and he’s very in control, but he’s also got that edge, which just — he’s very rounded and multi-layered, and I just love him. So, of course, that would be something that I would be interested in.”
