Craig Melvin was promoted to anchor of the first two hours of the Today Show in 2025 after Hoda Kotb’s departure. Despite his status with the network, the host has missed out on covering several big events this year, starting with the Winter Olympics earlier this year. After yet another snub, he expressed fear of being “phased out” of the morning news program. Keep reading to find out what’s going on.
Today Snubs Craig Melvin For Upcoming Segment
The Today Show is hitting the road again. Al Roker and Dylan Dryer went to Missouri in April to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the famous Route 66. The idea for the iconic highway was created in Springfield, MO, in 1926. The trip didn’t go smoothly for the two hosts, but they’re hitting the road again for another massive event.
Washington, D.C., has a huge celebration planned for Independence Day this year to honor 250 years of independence for the United States. But Williamsburg, Virginia, also has a special place in the history of the country’s independence. It played a pivotal role in the Revolutionary War and celebrated the news of the country’s independence on July 25, 1776. Word traveled much slower back then.
Al Roker and Dylan Dreyer embark on a walking tour of the city’s most historical landmarks on May 15, 2026. The special segment will air on the Today Show‘s third hour. However, Craig Melvin wasn’t invited. Instead, comedian (and College of William and Mary alum) Patton Oswalt joins them on their historical adventure.
“Sponsored by Visit Williamsburg, the TODAY team will take you on an incredible tour of the city — walking the same streets as the country’s founders — checking out local landmarks, restaurants, breweries and more,” the official Today website said about the road trip. A limited number of viewers are invited to traverse the city with Al Roker and Dylan Dreyer. Click here to find out how to get tickets.

Host Fears He’s Being ‘Phased Out’
Craig Melvin had an interesting response to being left out yet again. He was supposed to travel to Italy in February to cover the Olympics. His plans were canceled after Savannah Guthrie’s mother went missing.
“I’m being phased out,” Craig Melvin said live on the air when Al Roker and Dylan Dreyer were discussing the upcoming trip to Williamsburg. His co-hosts laughed off the joke, but Al Roker did admit that Patton Oswalt is “special” to him.
Craig Melvin didn’t explain why he couldn’t accompany his co-hosts on the trip. However, he hosts the show’s first two hours, plus the third hour. The Today Show likely needs him to stay in the studio while Al Roker and Dylan Dreyer go on the walking tour.
Don’t miss the celebration in Williamsburg, Virginia, on NBC’s show’s third hour on Friday, May 15. Share your thoughts on the show snubbing Craig Melvin in the comments.
