Savannah Guthrie recently came back to Today after a brief hiatus, after current events previously led her to take a two-month hiatus earlier this year. Despite this, it was announced that she would once again depart the show for a few more weeks. Guthrie herself explained the situation during a recent broadcast.
Savannah Guthrie Announced That She Would Be Taking Another Hiatus Around Two Days After A Previous Break From Today
Guthrie first joined Today as a co-anchor back in 2012. Previously, she contributed as a third-hour co-host and chief legal analyst the year prior.
Earlier this year, Guthrie took a leave of absence from the show following the disappearance of her mother, Nancy, in Arizona. Guthrie returned to the show back in April after a hiatus of around two months. On July 14, she also returned to the show after a planned four-day absence.
However, just a few days later, on July 16, it was announced that she would be off from Today for the next “few” weeks. At the time, it was shared that she would be filming for a new project.
Guthrie confirmed that she would be working on the game show Wordle. During the broadcast, she shared, “We’re about to do it. Guys, I’m headed over to shoot Wordle over the next few weeks. We’re going to shoot the whole season and we’re super excited.”
Many Of Guthrie’s Today Co-Stars Were Fans Of The Game That Inspired The Show
Guthrie also teased that the show should come out soon, though a date hasn’t been settled. As she explained, “I can’t wait for everyone to see it. It’ll probably air, I think, in the new year.”
Jimmy Fallon serves as an executive producer on the upcoming game show. The series is based on the word game of the same name. Reportedly, The New York Times, which has published the game since 2022, is helping to create the show.

Following this recent update, Guthrie’s co-stars expressed their excitement over the show. Carson Daly shared that he “can’t wait,” while Sheinelle Jones looked back at “when Wordle hit the Today show and we became obsessed.” Meanwhile, Craig Melvin mused, “We’re going to lose you for a minute, though.”
Likewise, taking to the comments, fans also shared their excitement over the show, while wishing the best for Savannah. Much like the Today co-hosts, many were already fans of the game. Some comments included:
- “How nice her job lets her take off for another job!”
- “Can’t wait. I play everyday.”
- “Congratulations, i hope you have a fun time making this show.”
- “You will make it a hit show; they are SO lucky to have your talent for what is slated to be the top game show in tv … watch out Jeopardy.”
