There’s rarely a dry eye in the studio during emotional segments on the Today Show. Sheinelle Jones was left in tears after special surprise guests joined her on live on stage during a recent episode. Keep reading for all the details on the heartfelt moment.
Sheinelle Jones Put Life On Hold To Care For Dying Husband
Sheinelle Jones took a leave of absence from the Today Show in December 2024 to care for her ailing husband, Uche Ojeh. He was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a cancerous brain tumor that’s sadly terminal, and passed away in May 2025. Savannah Guthrie announced it on the morning program. She was among the Today hosts who stood by Sheinelle Jones’ side throughout the heartbreaking ordeal.
The grieving widow returned to the NBC news program in September 2025. A few months later, she was promoted from the show’s third hour to co-host with Jenna Bush Hager on the fourth hour. Many fans believe the promotion was already in the works when her husband got sick. On her first day on Jenna & Sheinelle, Sheinelle Jones shared a heartwarming text her late husband sent her years earlier, predicting that she might replace Hoda Kotb as Jenna’s co-host. His prediction came true.
Today Show Surprise Guests Leave Her In Tears
Sheinelle Jones has been open about the devastating loss of her husband and raising their three children as a single mom. She recently commiserated with Jenna Bush Hager about raising teenagers. Sheinelle Jones’ oldest son, Kayin, is 16. Her twins, Clare and Uche Jr., are 13.
One of the other things Sheinelle Jones put on hold during her husband’s illness was the release of her book Through Mom’s Eyes. The book is a collection of parenting anecdotes collected from celebrities, athletes, and other public figures. The book finally came out on Tuesday, April 14, nearly a year after her husband’s death.
Sheinelle was already emotional talking about the book with Jenna Bush Hager. But then the doors in the studio opened, and her three children walked out with flowers.

Her Children Show Support
Sheinelle Jones’ three kids did more than just show up with flowers. They each shared insight into her writing process and their support of the project. Her oldest son, Kayin, said:
“You’ve worked on this since quarantine. We’ve had the ups and downs. I mean, I remember when you lost your computer, it broke even… We’ve obviously gone through so much and I’m so happy for you.”
Uche Jr. praised his mom, “I feel like her compassion and kindness to everybody she’s around just has such a great effect on everybody.” Sheinelle Jones’ daughter gave the book the best review from the teenage perspective: “I read it and I actually really liked it. It was so good.”
Sheinelle Jones dedicated Through Mom’s Eyes to her children and late husband. It’s available for sale now. Tell us in the comments if you plan to read it.
