Indian cricket ushered in a new era on Saturday, July 4, as teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi etched his name into the record books with his international debut against England in the second T20I at Old Trafford. At just 15 years and 99 days old, the left-handed opener became the youngest player ever to represent India in international cricket, breaking a record that had belonged to Sachin Tendulkar for nearly four decades.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi overtakes Tendulkar after 37 years

Tendulkar’s debut against Pakistan in November 1989 had long stood as one of Indian cricket’s most iconic milestones. The batting legend made his international bow at the age of 16 years and 205 days, a benchmark that remained untouched for 37 years.

Suryavanshi has now rewritten that chapter of history. By making his debut before turning 16, the Bihar youngster became the youngest male cricketer to wear the Indian jersey in international cricket. His achievement is even more remarkable considering he also surpassed Shafali Verma, who made her India debut at 15 years and 239 days, making Suryavanshi the youngest player—male or female—to represent India at the senior international level.

Fearless start announces arrival on the big stage

Opening the batting in place of Sanju Samson, Suryavanshi displayed remarkable confidence from the outset. Facing England pace spearhead Jofra Archer, the youngster made an unforgettable first impression by dispatching the very first ball of his international career for a towering six.

The promising innings ended at 14 runs from 10 deliveries after he was stumped off Will Jacks, but his brief stay at the crease offered a glimpse of his fearless approach. His knock included two towering sixes and reflected the attacking style that has made him one of India’s brightest young prospects.

IPL heroics paved the way for India call-up

Suryavanshi’s selection was the reward for a sensational IPL 2026 campaign with the Rajasthan Royals. The teenage batter dominated the tournament, finishing as the highest run-scorer with 776 runs to claim the Orange Cap. He also rewrote the IPL record books by smashing 72 sixes during the season—the most by any batter in a single edition of the tournament. Those extraordinary performances, coupled with his consistent displays in age-group cricket, convinced the selectors that he was ready for the international stage despite his young age.

His debut may have lasted only 10 balls, but Suryavanshi’s record-breaking appearance marked the beginning of what Indian cricket hopes will be a long and successful international career.
