NORTH VANCOUVER — Voters are heading to the polls in British Columbia’s North Vancouver-Capilano, with byelections also taking place in two ridings in Quebec and Ontario.

The riding in North Vancouver is considered a safe Liberal seat, where former cabinet minister Jonathan Wilkinson won for a fourth time last year with almost 60 per cent of the vote, his best result.

Wilkinson resigned as a member of Parliament in June to become Canada’s ambassador to the European Union, with longtime Liberal aide Braeden Caley stepping away from his role in Ottawa to launch a campaign for the seat.

Caley, who hails from B.C., has held a string of positions with the party, most recently serving as deputy chief of staff to Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Lawyer Stephen Curran is running for the Conservatives under Pierre Poilievre, local NDP organizer Stephen Tweedale is the candidate for Avi Lewis’s New Democrats, and scientist and advocate Shelley Luce is running for Elizabeth May’s Greens.

Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

The Liberals’ national poll numbers are being buoyed by Carney’s decision to walk away from trade negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump, and Elections Canada says more than 11,000 people voted early in North Vancouver over the weekend as news of the latest escalation in the trade battle was breaking.

Toronto’s Beaches-East York riding is also considered safe for the Liberals as voters there head to the polls in Monday’s byelection, while the Conservatives aim to hold Quebec’s Chicoutimi-Le Fjord riding, decided in a tight three-way contest last year.

The House of Commons returns on Sept. 21 and more byelections are expected in the coming months in Saskatchewan, Quebec and Ontario.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 31, 2026.
