West Ham are set to contact the Professional Game Match Officials Limited after their late equaliser against Arsenal was ruled out following a VAR review.

The Hammers thought they had earned a dramatic stoppage-time goal on Sunday when Callum Wilson found the net, only for the effort to be overturned.

VAR judged that Pablo had fouled David Raya in the build-up.

Club expected to request VAR audio

Sources claim West Ham will ask for further clarification over the decision and also request access to the audio between referee Chris Kavanagh and VAR official Darren England.

The decision proved significant at both ends of the table.

Arsenal held on for a 1-0 win, moving five points clear in the Premier League title race, while West Ham remain in the relegation zone, one point behind Tottenham.

    Rooney backs VAR decision

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney said he believed the officials made the correct call.

“It’s a clear foul,” Rooney said.

“You can clearly see the arm crosses his face and it impacts him getting to the ball. I think it’s the right decision.”

Rooney added that, despite frequent criticism of VAR, he felt it worked properly on this occasion.

“It’s the one time I actually think VAR has done a really good job in such an important game,” he said.

Rooney criticises protection given to goalkeepers

Although he agreed with the decision itself, Rooney admitted he has long disliked how much protection goalkeepers receive inside the penalty area.

“You go anywhere near the goalkeeper and it’s a foul,” he said.

“Throughout my career, I’ve had a dislike for goalkeepers because of that reason. They already have a big advantage.”
