With JJ Gabriel nearing a Premier League debut for Manchester United, head coach Michael Carrick has explained why the 15-year-old has been promoted astonishingly early.
Having included Gabriel in first-team training since his appointment in January, Carrick says the forward has been “doing really well”.
“JJ is a big talent,” acknowledged Carrick. “We obviously think an awful lot of him, but patience is important in managing everything that comes with that and working with him in development.”

JJ Gabriel stats: Why Man United are excited about forward
In his first season as a regular at Under-18 Premier League level, Gabriel scored his 21st goal in 23 appearances in all competitions in a win over title rivals Manchester City on March 21.
He netted hat-tricks against Derby County and Liverpool and the goal against City was the seventh consecutive match in all competitions in which Gabriel had scored, finding the net 10 times in total across those games and contributing an assist.
“JJ is a fantastic talent,” Under-18s lead coach Darren Fletcher said, via United’s website. “I’ve enjoyed working with him immensely, getting to know him.
“He’s a young lad with a massive hype. There’s a lot of noise around him – and deservedly so, because he’s a really talented kid.”
When could JJ Gabriel play for Manchester United?
Premier League rules state that players must be 15 by August 31 in a season to feature for a first team in the campaign.
Gabriel was 15 on October 6, so he will not be eligible to feature in the league until 2026/27.
With many of United’s first-team players at the World Cup this summer, the chances could rise of Gabriel playing for the first team during pre-season.
Two break-out teenage stars of this Premier League campaign – Arsenal’s Max Dowman and Liverpool’s Rio Ngumoha – first caught most supporters’ eye when they shone for their clubs during pre-season last year.
Ruben Amorim, who left his role as permanent manager in January, was the first boss to involve Gabriel in the first-team squad and Carrick, who improved United’s form considerably after initially becoming interim head coach until the end of the season, will surely be tempted to give him minutes now he has landed the job permanently.
Age rules are different for the FA Cup, leading to Fletcher being asked if he was going to give Gabriel a place in his matchday squad before overseeing a third round defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in January.
“He could be, but he’s not going to be,” replied Fletcher, who briefly took charge between Amorim’s exit and Carrick’s arrival.
“Anybody could be picked. I’m super excited by his talent, but the most important thing is that he keeps developing.
“He’s doing fantastically well but he’s still got lots to learn. He’s developing within there, but the world’s his oyster and he just needs to go on his journey. His time will come in due course.
“For just now, it’s a little bit early, I think. A lot of people would agree with me, but I couldn’t speak highly enough of JJ.”
Which positions can JJ Gabriel play in?
United have used Gabriel in central midfield, attacking midfield, as a centre-forward and on the left wing. “He works hard,” said Fletcher, discussing Gabriel’s attitude and personal qualities.
“The first thing I say is he loves football. He loves training; he loves playing, he loves having the ball, he loves expressing himself.
“He makes fantastic decisions; he’s just got an enthusiasm for the game that’s amazing. A 15-year-old with a bright future ahead of him.
“He’s got an amazing family and amazing support around him, and he’s someone we’re delighted to have at the club.
“We just hope he keeps improving, learning every day and keeps being the boy that he is really, enjoying playing football and going and expressing himself and scoring lots of goals so that Manchester United Under-18s win every game. Then I’ll be a happy man.”
JJ Gabriel England record
Gabriel has won six caps for England at Under-15 level and three at Under-16 level. His first international goal is yet to come.
He was called up at Under-17 level for the first time in March 2026 for matches against Faroe Islands, Israel and Estonia at training base St George’s Park.
The Irish Mirror reported that Gabriel was born and raised in the UK but is eligible to play for England, Ireland, Cyprus and Trinidad and Tobago through his Irish father, Cypriot mother and Trinidadian grandfather.

Gabriel could follow in the footsteps of the likes of Ngumoha and Dowman by breaking records at his club.
Ngumoha became the Reds’ youngest-ever scorer with a goal against Newcastle this season when the winger was four days shy of his 17th birthday.
Attacking midfielder Dowman became the youngest scorer in the history of the Premier League with a solo goal against Everton at the age of 16 years and 73 days.
At 15 years and 10 months old when the 2026/27 season is scheduled to start, Gabriel has a little time on his side to become United’s youngest-ever player and almost the whole season in which to become their youngest player in the modern era.
