Born in 2004 in the Gopalganj district of Bihar, Sakib’s rise to the pinnacle of world cricket is a story of immense sacrifice. Hailing from a modest background, his father, Ali Ahmed Hussain, was a farmer who had to give up his livelihood due to chronic knee problems. The financial burden of the household fell heavily on the family, but Sakib’s athletic prowess offered a glimmer of hope.
Interestingly, cricket was not Sakib’s first choice. He initially dreamed of joining the Indian Army, spending his mornings running on local tracks to build stamina. Every great athlete has a turning point, and for Sakib, it was the moment he transitioned from tennis-ball cricket to the professional leather-ball game. Professional gear was an expense the family simply could not afford. Recognizing her son’s talent and dedication, his mother, Subuktara Khatoon, made a heart-wrenching decision to sell her gold jewellery to buy him his first pair of cricket spikes.
That sacrifice became Sakib’s driving force. He promised himself that he would make every delivery count. His journey took him through the Bihar Cricket League and the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, where his ‘hit-the-deck’ style and ability to consistently clock over 145 kph began to attract attention from scouts across the country.
The IPL scouting net of KKR and SRH
Sakib’s path to the SRH playing XI was not a direct one. He was first picked up by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2024 auction for his base price of ₹20 lakh. While he didn’t get a game that season, the experience of being in an IPL dressing room was invaluable.
He also served as a net bowler for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where he reportedly impressed the likes of MS Dhoni with his discipline and ability to bowl tight lines at high speeds. His domestic form in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy, where he took a stunning 6/41 against Arunachal Pradesh, finally made him ‘un-ignorable.’ In the IPL 2026 mini-auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad secured him for ₹30 lakh, a move that is already looking like the bargain of the season.

While his raw speed, often referred to as the ‘Gopalganj Express’, is his primary weapon, Hussain has evolved into a tactical bowler under the guidance of SRH pace bowling coach Varun Aaron. Against Rajasthan, he demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of T20 bowling, using a skiddy trajectory and a deceptive back-of-the-hand slower ball to keep the batters guessing.
How Sakib Hussain rattled Rajasthan Royals?
Coming into the side as a tactical replacement, Sakib wasted no time in making his presence felt. His very first wicket was the prized scalp of Yashasvi Jaiswal, arguably one of the most dangerous openers in modern T20 cricket. Sakib is now the seventh player in the history of the IPL to take a four-wicket haul in his maiden game, joining an elite list that includes legends like Shoaib Akhtar.
