Skin cancer deaths in men are climbing at roughly twice the rate seen in women, but the habits that raise their risk touch every member of a household. Here is how families can protect themselves together, from toddlers to grandparents.

Why Are Men More Likely to Die from Skin Cancer Than Women?

Men are dying from skin cancer at nearly twice the rate of women, largely because they skip skin checks and miss early warning signs. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, men aged 15 to 39 are 55 percent more likely to die of melanoma than women in the same age group.

Dr. S. Max Vale, a dermatologist at UW Medicine Primary Care at South Lake Union, told Right as Rain by UW Medicine that “Men are, at the baseline, less likely to see a doctor, potentially delaying care. In Washington, melanoma incidence and mortality are highest among white men over age 50.” Melanoma in men often appears on the back, torso or scalp, spots that are difficult to check without a partner’s help. After age 50, the American Academy of Dermatology says men become more likely than women to develop melanoma, and that gap widens with each decade.

How Can Families Spot Skin Cancer Early?

Monthly self-exams and an annual full-body check by a dermatologist give families the best shot at catching skin cancer while it is still highly treatable. Partners and parents should look at the spots each person cannot see, especially the back, scalp and ears.

Teach kids early to notice new moles or existing spots that change shape, size or color. Vale recommends regular self-exams year-round, not just during summer months. Because melanoma often appears in hidden areas, a partner’s second look can be lifesaving, particularly for men who are less likely to schedule dermatology visits on their own. When caught early, melanoma and most skin cancers have a high cure rate, so building a family routine around checks matters more than any single doctor’s visit.

What Sunscreen and Clothing Habits Protect the Whole Family from Skin Cancer?

Daily sunscreen, UPF-rated clothing and wide-brim hats form the foundation of family sun protection, and they work year-round, not only in summer. Skip tanning beds entirely. Just one session before age 35 raises the risk of melanoma by 75 percent.

Keep sunscreen by the front door so no one heads outside without applying it. A 2016 American Academy of Dermatology report found only 54 percent of men knew a base tan does not shield skin from UV damage, compared with 70 percent of women, so parents can help close that knowledge gap at home. If someone in the household wants a bronzed look, self-tanning lotions or oils offer a safe swap for a tanning bed. Sun-protective clothing matters most for outdoor workers, athletes and kids who spend hours at practice or recess.

Related: What Do SPF 30, 50 and 100 Really Mean? Dermatologists Explain Sun Protection

Sunscreen aisles are stacked with SPF numbers ranging from 15 to 100, and the higher tiers usually carry higher price tags. Whether those extra digits actually deliver better protection is a question dermatologists field every summer. What Does SPF Actually Mean on a Sunscreen Bottle? SPF, short for sun protection factor, measures how well a […]

When Should Families Check the UV Index and Limit Sun Exposure?

Avoid direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when UV rays hit hardest, and check the daily UV index before outdoor plans. When the UVI forecast climbs above 6, the risk of sun damage rises sharply.

You can check the daily forecast at sites such as Accuweather.com. Do not assume windows keep everyone safe. Glass blocks most UVB rays but lets UVA rays through, so exposure builds up at home, at work and in the car during long commutes. Build a family routine around shade breaks, water bottles and reapplying sunscreen every two hours during outdoor time. These habits protect kids, teens and adults across every season, and they turn skin cancer prevention into something the whole household does together.
