The countdown has begun for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, which will be held in England and Wales from June 12 to July 5. The prestigious tournament will bring together the world’s best teams in a battle for T20 supremacy, with India entering the competition carrying the hopes of millions of fans. After several near misses in ICC events over the years, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side will be eager to script history and lift their maiden Women’s T20 World Cup trophy. With a balanced squad featuring experienced campaigners and exciting young talents, India are being viewed as one of the strongest contenders heading into the tournament.

Aakash Chopra highlights two key players in India’s campaign

Former India batter and cricket analyst Aakash Chopra believes India’s fortunes in the tournament could largely depend on how effectively they perform during the Powerplay overs. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra singled out Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma as two players who could hold the key to India’s title aspirations. According to Chopra, T20 matches are often shaped by the momentum generated in the first six overs, and India’s opening pair has the ability to seize control from the outset. He praised Shafali’s aggressive approach and stressed the importance of consistency from the explosive opener. Chopra also pointed towards Mandhana’s outstanding record in English conditions, suggesting that the vice-captain could play a crucial role during the tournament. He further added that Mandhana’s success in England makes her an even more valuable asset.

“The Indian girls have won the 50-over World Cup. Can they win the 20-over World Cup? That’s the big question. It’s a good team. Where do you win T20 games? One is if you control the Powerplay with the bat and with the ball. With the bat, Shafali Verma’s consistent avatar is very, very good. Smriti Mandhana will be there with her. Smriti Mandhana in England is another beast altogether. She has scored a lot of runs there. So, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, as your Powerplay players, can actually control the game. One of them should bat deep into the innings, which they can,” Chopra explained.

High expectations from star-studded Indian team

Expectations are understandably high from the Indian side ahead of the global event. Under the leadership of Harmanpreet, the team boasts a blend of experience, firepower, and versatility across departments. Apart from captain Harmanpreet and the opening duo of Mandhana and Shafali, India possess several proven match-winners. Jemimah Rodrigues adds stability to the middle order, while wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh is capable of changing games with her finishing ability. All-rounders Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav provide balance, and the pace attack, spearheaded by Renuka Thakur, offers crucial wicket-taking options. Emerging talents such as Nandini Sharma further strengthen the squad’s depth.

With a talented group of players and growing belief within the camp, India will hope that 2026 becomes the year they finally conquer the Women’s T20 World Cup stage and bring home the coveted title.
