India breathed new life into their World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 campaign with a commanding 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test at Galle on Wednesday. Chasing 372 for victory, the hosts were bowled out for 206 on the fifth and final day, with young left-arm spinner Manav Suthar producing a sensational performance to finish with a 10-wicket match haul.

Suthar was the chief architect of India’s victory, claiming 6/55 in Sri Lanka’s second innings after taking four wickets in the first. His outstanding effort helped India defend a challenging target and secure a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series. The result also gave India a much-needed boost in the WTC standings after a difficult start to the current cycle.

India’s PCT improves, but fifth place remains

Despite the emphatic victory, India could not move higher than fifth in the updated WTC points table. Their points percentage (PCT), however, climbed significantly from 48.15 to 53.33 following the win. India now have 64 points from their campaign so far. Sri Lanka remain sixth, but their PCT has fallen to 33.33 after the defeat. The result has widened the gap between the two sides and given India’s qualification hopes a valuable lift.

India’s inability to climb into the top four is largely linked to Bangladesh’s stunning victory over Australia in Darwin. Bangladesh’s historic success moved them into fourth place and strengthened their own position in the race for a place in the WTC final.

India face little room for error

The Galle triumph is only the beginning of what promises to be a demanding finish to India’s WTC campaign. The second Test against Sri Lanka will begin in Colombo on August 23, before India travel to New Zealand for a two-match series in November. They will then finish their WTC schedule with a five-Test home series against Australia next year.

With several matches still to come, India’s qualification equation is straightforward but extremely demanding. The Shubman Gill-led side cannot afford another prolonged losing run, especially after already suffering four defeats in the current cycle. If India manage to win seven of their remaining eight Tests, their final PCT could rise to 68.52. However, six wins and two defeats would leave them at 62.96, making every result increasingly important.

The Galle victory has therefore provided India with momentum rather than complete security. With Bangladesh now occupying fourth place and the leading teams maintaining strong PCTs, India will need to sustain their winning form throughout the remainder of the WTC cycle if they are to secure a place in the final.
