Zendaya debuted one of her most dramatic press-tour transformations yet while promoting “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” alongside her husband, Tom Holland, in Mexico City.
The 29-year-old actress arrived with blunt micro bangs, a towering faux bun, and a sheer black gown inspired by the superhero franchise. While the newlywed couple looked affectionate at the event, Zendaya’s daring hair transformation quickly divided social media users.
Zendaya and Holland posed together in front of Aztlán 360, the 278-foot Ferris wheel at the Aztlán Feria de Chapultepec, during the July 20 fan event.
Hairstylist Ursula Stephen created Zendaya’s retro-inspired look using faux micro bangs and a faux top bun styled over the actress’ natural brunette bob. The voluminous updo drew comparisons to the beehive hairstyle worn by Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”
Despite the dramatic change, the micro bangs did not appear to be a permanent haircut. The use of faux hair allowed Zendaya to embrace the severe fringe without altering her natural bob.
Zendaya has developed a reputation for taking major fashion risks, but her Mexico City transformation did not win over everyone.
“Another bad wig, bad makeup and bad outfit,” one critic wrote. “Another day, another awful wig,” another person complained.
A third commenter offered a more mixed assessment, writing, “The clothes and hair are not flattering but she’s so beautiful she could be bald and wearing a trash bag and she’d look amazing.”
Other responses were significantly harsher, with one critic claiming the hair “looks like she cut it herself during a drugged rage.” Another simply wrote, “Don’t like new hairdo.”
Zendaya Continues Her ‘Spider-Man’ Method Dressing

Zendaya paired the polarizing hairstyle with a black Ashi Studio gown from the designer’s Spring/Summer 2026 couture collection. The high-neck dress combined glossy black fabric with a sheer lace panel along one side. Long strands of fringe extended from the outfit, subtly recalling the appearance of a spiderweb.
The actress has repeatedly used method dressing to reference the projects she is promoting. Her “Dune” press-tour wardrobe included futuristic and desert-inspired pieces, while her “Challengers” appearances featured tennis-related details.
For “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” the actress and Roach have relied on black-and-white color schemes, web-shaped jewelry, and clothing that evokes different versions of Spider-Man’s suit.
Zendaya And Tom Holland Pose As Newlyweds

The Mexico City appearance also gave fans another glimpse at Zendaya and Holland following confirmation that they secretly married.
Holland addressed the marriage speculation during a June interview with Esquire after fake, artificial intelligence-generated images purportedly showing the couple’s wedding circulated online. The actor has since publicly referred to Zendaya as his “wife,” confirming that the longtime couple quietly tied the knot.
Holland and Zendaya were first romantically linked while promoting “Spider-Man: Homecoming” in 2017. They confirmed their relationship in 2021 after being photographed kissing inside Holland’s car in Los Angeles. Their relationship now closely parallels the franchise that brought them together. The pair will reprise their roles as Peter Parker and MJ in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” their fourth movie together in the Marvel series.
At the Mexico event, the couple posed with their arms around each other before joining director Destin Daniel Cretton. They also displayed a Mexican flag decorated with Spider-Man artwork.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Begins Peter Parker’s Next Chapter

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” arrives exclusively in theaters on July 31. The film follows Peter after the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” in which the world forgot his identity and his relationships with MJ and Ned Leeds were erased.
According to Sony Pictures, Peter is now fighting crime full-time while watching his former friends move forward without him. That pressure triggers a transformation that could either threaten his future or help him confront a powerful new enemy.
Holland and Zendaya will be joined by Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Tramell Tillman, and Michael Mando.
The movie arrives during an especially busy period for the newlyweds. Both also appear in “The Odyssey,” with Zendaya portraying Athena and Holland playing Telemachus. Zendaya is additionally set to return as Chani in “Dune: Part Three,” while Holland has projects including an untitled Fred Astaire biopic and “The Partner” in development.
For now, however, their focus remains on bringing Peter Parker and MJ back to theaters.
