Alexander Zverev claimed the first Grand Slam title of his career after overcoming Flavio Cobolli in a dramatic five-set French Open final.

The German, seeded second in Paris, defeated the Italian 6-1 4-6 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 to finally end his wait for a major crown after falling short in his previous three Grand Slam finals.

Zverev appeared on course for a straightforward victory when he stormed through the opening set and quickly regained control after Cobolli levelled the match by taking the second.

However, the contest became increasingly tense as the pressure of the occasion began to show.

    Zverev survives late wobble

Having entered the tournament as one of the favourites, Zverev looked comfortable early on but struggled to maintain his composure as Cobolli refused to fade away.

The fourth set proved particularly difficult for the 29-year-old, who twice surrendered service games and produced a series of untimely double faults as the match tightened.

Physical issues also threatened to derail his challenge, with Zverev requiring treatment and electrolyte supplements as signs of cramp emerged during the latter stages of the contest.

Cobolli, appearing in his first Grand Slam final, had the chance to serve out the fourth set at 5-4 but was unable to convert. The Italian also squandered a set point in the tie-break after miscuing a routine forehand volley.

He eventually recovered to force a deciding set and keep his hopes alive.

    Fifth-set nerves before breakthrough moment

Both players showed signs of tension in the final set.

Errors flowed from both racquets, but Zverev gradually found greater consistency and moved into a winning position with an early double break.

From there, Cobolli struggled to stay with him as fatigue began to take its toll.

Zverev maintained his advantage and eventually sealed the win when Cobolli sent a smash beyond the baseline on championship point.

The German immediately collapsed onto the clay before covering his face with his hands as the emotion of the moment took over.

Long wait finally comes to an end

The triumph marks a significant milestone in Zverev’s career, having previously endured disappointment in three Grand Slam finals.

It also ends the recent dominance of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who had shared the previous nine major singles titles between them.

With Sinner exiting the tournament earlier than expected and Alcaraz absent through injury, the French Open presented a major opportunity for the chasing pack.
