It’s finally happening! 24 Jump Street is officially in the works at Sony, and stars Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and Ice Cube are all in talks to return.
Rodney Rothman (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) is set to direct the third installment of the crime-comedy franchise, according to Variety, and has written the script alongside Hill and Meghan Malloy.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who helmed the first two films, 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street, are also returning as producers alongside Neal H. Moritz.
In 21 Jump Street, underachieving cops Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) go undercover at a local high school to take down a drug ring. Ice Cube plays their superior, Captain Dickson. They repeat their undercover schtick in college in the sequel, 22 Jump Street.
So, what happened to 23 Jump Street? We’ve technically already seen it, as the sequel ends with an extended montage of Schmidt and Jenko’s future undercover missions—including medical school, outer space, and an animated series—to parody franchise excess. That means the third installment’s title, 24 Jump Street, is just a continuation of the running joke.
Or maybe it’s just that it took so long that they had to skip one, as producer Neal H. Moritz joked in an Instagram post featuring the script’s front page. (It has been a long time coming, after all, with a third installment in active development at Sony since 2016.)
Keep an eye out for updates on 24 Jump Street from The People’s Movies, including a trailer and release date!
